I love that you've come into a thread, where a lot of the commentators are European and you're complaining about American superiority complexes among the people debating this without any sense of irony.

are you from portugal? a lot of europeans have a sense of superiority too. it is their country and they have their own needs and fears.

We Americans need to realize that not every country is like ours.

Sorry, the ethnocentrism argument is tired. By that same logic you could say laws in Afghanistan forbidding women from effectively being seen in public should be permissible because “it’s their country and they have different needs.”

I'm from Europe.

And in the Europe I was raised in, racial fears aren't justification for bad behaviour.

got it, so not from portugal. and it isn’t racial fear, it is cultural fear. they don’t want some handmaid’s tale stuff in their country. they don’t have to wear their burqas. religious people do the most sometimes.

It's absolutely a racial fear. The bill was introduced by a far-right wing party which is notorious for links to white supremacism.

Okay I’ll mention it again cause nobody responded the first time.

Forget about Europe, Islamophobia, anti-Arab etc.

There are many Muslim countries that also have a ban on niqab and burqa. Is there another side to the argument/reason for the ban that we aren’t discussing? Surely the Muslim countries can’t be islamophobic. So what’s the reason?

I'm tryna rationalise this in a way that explores "safety". But fr tell me how many women in muslim attire, let alone burqa/niqab are you ever gonna see outside, then tell me how many of them are even gonna CONSIDER doing anything to you...
Now tell me can you seriously not hold your own against someone covered head to toe in bedsheets, or even just run away from them. Childish argument but come on :brat:

I was never gonna finish with all the Madonna pfps there were like sooo many why are you still reading yap yap yap sahur

This one sure brought a bunch of weirdos out of the woodwork ngl

not at all. some people are just sick of the toxicity of religion. France banned burqas a long time ago because they are a secular society. people are just dramatic af about the ban.

I am too, but states banning the practice/expression of religion (and disproportionately targeting one specific religion) ain’t it. The battle for secularity is fought in the realm of civil discourse, not government censorship of civil religious practice.

Ok. Maybe not 100% appropriate example, but it’s about the „idea” - so, Indonesia can ban ONE Gaga’s show in arena because of „religious protests” but Portugal isn’t allowed to ban thousands of burqas in public space?

This is called caring for the culture and assets of a given place when they begin to deviate from the main idea - every country has the right to do so and every tourist should respect it.

There's this thing called motivation.

When that motivation is white supremacism (this bill was introduced into the Portuguese legislature by an openly fascist party) then yeah, people will point it out.

Nothing says secular government like targeted legal restrictions against the freedom to practice religion.
