Meta says it faces a trillion-dollar penalty and damage to its advertising model. But the trial could go well beyond one company. It could make social media unrecognizable.

You know what, as much as I'm myself addicted to these platforms, please go ahead. All this **** is unhealthy and rotting brains.

Hoping for the best

At the risk of sounding like An Old... I feel simultaneously scared of & sympathetic for people who were born after social media became ubiquitous (even moreso now with AI)

They were born with all these powerful tools at their disposal & a lot of them are/will probably become evil sociopaths

It's very interesting to think about what the difference is between people with a reference to a world without social media, and people with no reference like that. I don't wanna sound old either but sometimes when come across something Gen Alpha is doing online I literally have no clue what is happening :toofunny:

No clue & it's often frightening 😬

We were all inclined to do stupid stuff when we were in our formative years..... but when your formative years are largely influenced by other young people being rewarded for/paid to do stupid/cruel/harmful things online in front of a slack-jawed, screen-addicted audience (& in theory YOU can easily join in & amass an audience of your own).............

the future is skibidi cooked fr fr, no cap...
we're all going to be outmogged & that's facts

Did I use any of that right? 👴🏼

As a person who has been on social media since before any of this was invented and remembers MySpace, Bebo and MSN and then early Twitter/Tumblr honestly good.

Kill algorithms all together I say, they ruin everything. If you’re on Twitter or Facebook you should be able to ONLY see content from the people you follow/befriend and what they share. Suggested posts and infinite scroll is the worst two features on social media.

I remember back in the day your Twitter timeline would be only users you follow, and what they retweet. That was how you discovered new users. No suggested content whatsoever. AND you could only scroll so far before the page cut off and you had to refresh. Heck even back then Twitter had no proper video function until like 2011.

This is why I prefer the old fashioned forum space. Yes you can get into arguments, but there's room to actually elaborate on them and resolve them with moderation, if needed. There's no endless scrolling, as it takes time to make an informative and interesting post that might gain traction, as opposed to just taking a thirst trap selfie and editing it to make yourself even thinner.

I don't care if that makes me old

I can't be optimistic about the outcome of this trial, but that'd be lovely actually.

Kids will frame this as a government control method or something to stop free speech because they can't live without the algorithm :ladyhaha: I pray this all comes true

Social media is a cesspool

All people do is mindlessly watch shorts and reels... And usually without headphones in public places.

Mind numbingly **** dumpster fire turd
