Sure, there are studio versions of songs like “Truckin’” or “Eyes of the World,” but the Dead have played the songs so many different times and published so many different live recordings than, if you ask a Deadhead what their favorite song is, they’re not gonna just say “Eyes of the World,” they’ll say “Eyes, Paris, Europe ‘72” or “Eyes, ‘92 compilation record,” which I think is a testament to how, even if the bones of the song stay the same (same lyrics, same melody, same or similar harmonic structure), they can be consistently reimagined in such a way that there is no definitive version of the song. Obviously pop shows are different (especially Gaga’s, which tend to be meticulously choreographed), but even just the variation from studio arrangement to live arrangement or night to night variability in how she sings or performs each song (different energy, different adlib, different harmony) is incredibly exciting to me and is one of the things I tend to look forward to the most as a fan of hers. Maybe that’s just the theatre kid in me who used to obsessively watch and listen to bootlegs of Wicked, but that’s my two cents on it.
