Help me pick for my niece?

Hi guys, it's my niece's birthday soon - she'll be 12. I've developed a bit of a tradition for buying her cassettes at birthdays or Christmas. I tend to either buy albums that are more current and I think she'd be into, or more importantly I've been buying more classic albums that I think she needs to hear and would broaden her musical appreciation.

I think the time has come for her indoctrination! I know she already has an 'in' on Gaga through The Dead Dance, but I want to get her an album that is a good segue into Gaga.

I'm curious what you all would choose if you were trying to show a 12 year old girl what she's all about. Would you go to the album that speak to you personally? Would you go for her most commercially successful one, or a critically praised album? Would you go for something that was more recent? Would you choose something that felt like it had the most relevance to a young girl? 

The answers to each of these is taking me in different directions.

Honestly, I'd say the best "Gaga" album for a 12 yr old would be The Fame. It's simultaneously one of her best and also very accessible. 
Maybe Mayhem, but I think the first half of that album could be off putting if she's not already into heavier sounding music like techno/industrial/rock etc.

Maybe Chromatica? It's more of a dance album and she might like it. The Fame is also a good choice.

I toyed with Chromatica but then thought while it's a good dance album, it's not really an album I'd pick as a Gaga introduction.

My 12yo sister is a die-hard kpopper and, after being overexposed to all Gaga things, her favorite Gaga album is Joanne, lol (and her #1 favorite song has become Dancin' In Circles, surprisingly topping Sour Candy with her former favorite gg Blackpink). 

And, funnily enough, when I was her age my favorite album was also Joanne (because it had just been released!)

That‘s a really beautiful tradition, building a sort of audiobiographical library with your niece 

Oddly enough, over the past few years, I‘ve taken a similar route with my little sister, but vinyls instead of cassettes … I think the last one was … the Impossible Princess picture disk … it just felt like where she was in life

I second The Fame … but Joanne is actually a solid second … and Chromatica somehow feels not entirely off-base, but Mayhem makes sense like a reintroduction with the recency aspect as well … something else to consider would be any records that were released on her birthday … it‘s much more nuanced, and definitely not a guarantee, but it‘s a fun option if possible …

My older brother got my little sister the “Oops … I Did It Again” (Japanese Maxi Single) back in the day, she was still in a car seat but it the shared holiday was neat …

But like, both of us had already been in touch with Gaga (TF/M, BTW, ARTPOP) pretty heavily, so the huge unexpected contrast on sounds and aesthetics with Joanne was just mesmerizing (for me, at least, and maybe it's the same for my sister, and even more so considering jazz, chromatica and mayhem). So, idk, I'm recommending Joanne because at its core it's a 12 year old girl album core

I know that u ask for Gaga recommendation, but Baby One More Time kind of fits well the 12 years old music, it was an album to grow up with as a teenager, would be beautiful to let her live this nostalgic experience but from her present 2026 perspective.

I was actually going to suggest the same album! My 12-year-old self was obsessed with it. 

Another recommendation that comes to mind is Spiceworld. 

As for Gaga, I reiterate the recommendations of The Fame, I think it’s the most palatable option for a young teenager.

Did she know The Fame Monster yet? If no, you just have to. The duration of the album also perfect, if she is also, like most people today, kinda have short attention span.

I would recommend "The Fame Monster".

Perfect length to get her intrigued, soundwise very fresh but not off-putting and heavy in productions and lyrics.

I'm sure she will have plenty of "This song is by Lady Gaga?"-moments, listening to Bad Romance, Telephone and Alejandro, if she has not already heard them. 

The lyrics from Alejandro & DITD are also very female-empowering, I can only imagine the impact this has on a 12-year old girl, not only having the "He's the right one for me, I have to be perfect", but hearing a woman sing "I am good as I am, either he get's it or he can go"

Can't wait for the update what album you went with, and what her impressions are of it, love the idea, I might copy that concept
