About Mayhem

So for a while now I have been analyzing Mayhem and trying to figure out the whole concept and how the songs fit together and honestly when it first came out I was kind of thinking "Why is Gaga singing about partying, being a bad girl and having relationship troubles? this doesn't sound like her life currently and sounds a bit immature for her" but I think it has finally clicked and I get it now. So obviously Gaga has talked a lot about how the album celebrates and incorporates sounds from earlier in her career and from people she has been inspired by since the beginning but I also think her experiences from earlier throughout her life and career are reflected in the lyrics (and her more recent ones as well) and this is what she meant by exploring different facets or versions of herself and fully integrating them to become who she is now.  So obviously the main themes on Mayhem are love, romance, partying, breakups/relationship issues, issues with fame and finding peace amidst chaos but I thought the album at first seemed a bit disconnected and that most themes were only really covered by 2-3 songs  for each one and that it was all messy and incoherent but after looking again I see now that it is called Mayhem because it is reflecting Gaga's inner world and journey and again reflecting on her experiences as they have made her who she is today (And of course because of how it sounds sonically with exploring many genres).

 

Songs about partying, young relationships and drinking (Zombieboy, Garden Of Eden, How Bad Do U Want Me, Killah)

Explores a time in Gaga's life when she was younger and partied/drank a lot, was more wild and wasn't super committed to her relationships. Also the Rick Genest nod here works since 2011 was a time when all of this applied and he was an important figure for her.

Songs about fame and issues with being famous (Shadow Of A Man, Perfect Celebrity) 

Explores both her more recent experiences (mostly around the Chromatica era most likely) and near the beginning as well with Gaga feeling objectified and struggling with not being noticed or appreciated early on as a woman in music.

Songs about love and her finding peace with Michael now (Vanish Into You, The Beast, Blade Of Grass, DWAS) 

Explores Gaga's life with Michael now and how she feels fully accepted for who she is with him, how she wants to spend her life with him and their specific relationship moments.

Songs about relationship issues and breakups (Lovedrug, Don't Call Tonight) 

Explores moments in Gaga's past relationships where they fell apart or were strained and how she still wanted to go back to them (Could be about Taylor, Christian, Luc etc. it is hard to say definitively)

Songs about inner turmoil and resilience (Disease, Abracadabra) 

Works together as a problem + solution or pathway towards being strong duo of songs and explores I assume the period around Chromatica when Gaga was really struggling (or possibly before)

 

So overall the groups of songs explore various moments and parts of Gaga's life throughout her career and we see how they have made her who she is now and how she has largely overcome her struggles as well. The album also has a kind of arc where it starts off with Gaga in strife and having inner turmoil with her struggling with inner darkness and by the end she finds the cure and happiness which is being in love with Michael. If I had a critique though it would be that most of the themes are explored through the lyrics (for the most part, not on all songs) quite superficially or in a more surface level way but I assume that is because Gaga wants to make the songs more relatable to a large audience of her fans + the GP (which was her stated goal during the Joanne era and has carried on thematically and lyrically throughout Chromatica and now Mayhem as well). 

So if I had to sum up the concept of Mayhem or theme it would be: Gaga's life experiences being explored and showing her own inner Mayhem and how it got her to being who she is now.

Also @Ultimecia since you have criticized Mayhem quite a few times on here as I have as well I wonder, does any of this change your perspective or feelings towards the album?

I know that I guess I just didn't understand how it applied to all the songs but I have only analyzed the album a few times and was more so trying to look at it through the "gothic dreams" or "long night out party" framing but as I said I get it now.

It's simply MAYHEM, so I'm comparing it to ARTPOP. It sounds a bit similar, but not quite as much and it's more settled, mature and darker. Gaga herself called this album chaos because it's unclear what's going on at first, but after a while, you understand the theme, arrangements, melodies and lyrics.

The boyf in the song is Jo Calderone and she's saying it's not gay to have a 3 way w yourself. you hate the crash but you love the rush...rush brand poppers bc she telling us she know's Jo is gay as hell now and wants to come out but he's in his own mayhem journey tormented by Stefani and Lady in Red into silence. He's only spoken one other time when he spoke through Ga and made his self titled album Jo-anne. Save him.

Yes but then how can a song have a core meaning(especially when intention is disregarded)? If every song is up to interpretation and every song just means something to each person then there is no 1 true meaning then. (I know that everyone can interpret the song differently and they can mean different things personally to everyone of course since it is a song available to be analyzed by the public but it still has to have a core meaning that can be understood).
