Spider-Man eyeing 2.5-2.7 BILLION box office

There’s 2 camps who are going to see it;

I’m in the first one. A Marvel fan who loves to see their adaptation of the comics in live action. I specifically went for Jean Grey being in it since she’s my favourite hero from the comics. I think a LOT of people are going to see it for the MCU’s first official X-Men character.

The second camp is Spider-Man does notoriously well at the box office (same for BatMan) because the public love them. Out of 9 live action movies only 2 have ever received less than 90% on Rotten Tomatoes as well. Spider-Man is probably currently the most popular and well known Marvel character ever besides maybe Iron Man.

Spider-Man is WAY more popular than Iron Man, and probably in today’s age even more popular than Batman.

Spidey has always spoken to the “common man” - he’s just a regular kid with a sense of infallible optimism, and everyone, no matter their age, race, or socio-economic class, roots for Spider-Man. He also I think has a more family friendly image than many of the other superheroes who are very ‘tortured’ (like Batman). Spider-Man has traditionally performed well in periods of political division, which we are certainly in. 

Iron Man only became popular for kicking off the Marvel cinematic universe and because of Robert Downey Jr’s iconic performance, imo. But if I polled five kids right now I bet at least one has read a Spider-Man comic or consumed Spider-Man media, movie aside. Iron Man (and every other superhero honestly) I bet not so much.

i never said Iron Man was more popular I just said nowadays he’s almost as popular as Spider-Man. And yes that is because of the MCU. Just like how any superhero’s popularity sky rockets because of the MCU. 

Also I doubt the five kids thing, only because Comic sales are in the toilet and their storylines since about 2016 have mostly (not all) been garbage or MCU related tie-ins — which is supported by the fact the MCU primarily adapts comic runs from the late 2000s into the 2010s.

I can assure you barely anyone under the age of 18 reads comics anymore really. If you asked 5 kids they’d all say they love an MCU character BECAUSE of the movies. Not the comics or barely other media outside maybe a cartoon (sadly).

It’s the same for the 2000s comic boon, comics had fallen off in popularity in the 80s but regained popularity in the late 90s/early 2000s BECAUSE of the Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four cartoons and then Fox movies. That’s why in the 2000s we got things like Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men to be more like their movie counterparts.

I’m an avid comic collector and it makes me sad to see what some comics have become in the last decade, even characters appearances have been altered to resemble the likeness of their live action counterparts.

Yeah I’m a big physical media advocate so I hope someday comics will have a new boom again
