Innovative rather than experimental is a great way to put it & I totally agree. At the end of the day, she is a mainstream pop artist. Nothing wrong with that either, she’s had and continues to have a huge impact on pop music, she’s fun, varied and interesting within that space and it’s made her what she is today. I don’t think we have to pretend she’s anything other than that, or act like that isn’t enough.

joanne, Chromatica, and mayhem are probably the least unique albums she’s released, if we’re not counting TF.  Even before TF her music and lyrics and concepts were very unique, not basic or generic.  But Joanne, Chromatica, and mayhem are for the most part very lyrically and musically regular and common. Of course a few tracks here and there that feel like it’s GAGA but then a lot of the tracks could be some other random artist and lack that unique Gaga zest we’ve all been longing for since TFM/BTW. 

find me at least 3 other albums released in the past 5 years by major pop acts that sound like mayhem

I think ‘safe’ is both right and wrong in different ways…… I would say she remains bold and ambitious in a lot of what she does… however after ARTPOP every move thereafter has felt slightly like she has deeply considered it / conscious not to fall from the path of career longevity, wanting to win the long-game through multiple talents and vocal ability, rather than shock value.

however I genuinely think she’s settled into her career now, she doesn’t just love WHAT she does, but HOW she’s doing it… and this is the most important… a talented artist ‘at peace’ in a healthy way is what we need so she can ultimately keep going, putting art into the world and rooting for our community.
