mlmc1995 89
Honestly sometimes I think there’s a section of fans that want Gaga to be something she isn’t, whether that’s wanting her to be an artist/person that she isn’t anymore, or even wanting her to be someone she never really was. And I’m not talking the odd criticism, but blanket disliking everything and being frustrated with her constantly. At this point, with respect, maybe stop being a fan and go and listen to music and artists that you actually like? There are actual experimental artists out there that could use your support. I have been a gaga stan for a decade now and there was never “arse-kissing” it was always the exact opposite. It was so bad here during joanne era that i left this site. I come back years later and it’s the same lame recycled factually false takes being typed out every day and yall can’t handle being called out so i will probably be banned. It’s like there is a constant pressure on her to prove herself for yall everyday like it really gets to a point… 6 minutes ago, Bronco said: She set herself a standard, she built a career and fan following on the basis of that standard. For those of us who care about the causes she spoke about and took risks in her activism for, it is totally normal to discuss our feelings to her declining public activism and increased silence on the issues. Those issues haven't gone away, they've only got worse. She painted herself as queer activist and she is still one. As i said being queer back then isn’t as normalised as being queer rn so this whole thing is pointless
JohnPokerface 817
If you're saying she's become too safe compared to her past work then I have to disagree. As many pointed out already musically she was never this out of the box experimental artist, she made really good catchy pop music. On many songs on TF, TFM and BTW she has this perfect sweet autotuned voice for pop radio. With Mayhem it feels more like she has perfected her craft rather than became safe, and you can actually tell that she put a lot of effort into it from production to the way she sings and how approached each song vocally. And that’s why it was such a step up from Chromatica, which we know Bloodpop basically forced her to make. I feel like she makes the best music when she’s really into it and actually makes something she wants. I don’t need her to go experimental just for the sake of it or to prove something to someone.

Silent for months as people are executed in the street for opposing fascist pedos kidnapping kids. Completely silent as children witness their loved ones be gunned down in the street, then themselves executed as the paramedics turn up to rescue them. Silent when she visits the UK about the fact that for the first time *in her lifetime* the UK government is stripping rights away from queer people. Queer identity may be more normalised now, but it's total ignorance to say this subject is pointless and a complete rewriting of social history to ignore the fact that things have got significantly worse for queer people than they were in 2011. In 2011, social liberals held the white house & senate. Equality legislation was advancing. The courts were taking liberal social stances. The moral majority/religious right were at their nadir in US politics. It was a totally different world. 9 minutes ago, Mothermayhem said: I have been a gaga stan for a decade now and there was never “arse-kissing” it was always the exact opposite. Its just that her sound was a bit more "new" than others and now the world has caught up. The biggest risks she ever took were fashion based and for the most part the risks relied on shock factor. That only works for so long before it turns into the expected & now Gaga is still turning out avant garde haute couture looks but its less risky primarily because we expect it. Like 2 tours in a row we've had looks inspired by her hip surgery. All great pieces of fashion, all symbolic and part demonic or part gore. But like...its not risky for Gaga to be dressed exotically performing on operating tables anymore lol I think BTW had a fair bit of risk taking in it! Combining the very safe 80s pop with other genres to make formulaic pop that was kind of odd. I think at her best, she loves the template of pop but likes to screw with things inside that template which is what some of BTW's best did. I do think with the mayhem ball it worked having her rehash things she's largely done before bc it all cohered the best it ever has *however* now i want her to really push herself forward and more to say

It's incredibly disrespectful to the 36 people who died in ICE custody before she spoke out. I think the album as a whole body of work isn't that risky, but she definitely took risks with Judas/Black Jesus + Amen Fashion/Bloody Mary on the back of the Alejandro MV. But you think we should laugh and wait until we get to 39. The gays know how to party

But i do agree on the whole her music has never been super out there. I think it was distinct, more than anything, which people always lump in with out there or risky.

I flip flop on Government Hooker tbh. Because like sonically it's not really risky or experimental, just like you say distinct. Lyrically I am 50/50. Like sexualised lyrics by that point in mainstream pop weren't "risky" every one was doing them in some form, but her slant on it made them a bit more risqué vs the likes of S&M by Rihanna or everything Kesha was doing. Cherry Blues 360
4 hours ago, Bronco said: The reconstruction worked because it softened her and removed her from being scene as a drunk/drugged up mess and constant source of provocative or pretentious performances. I'd love to meet these Europeans who couldn't understand her making the most popular form of music in Europe that is literally her signature sound. By the time we got Stupid Love on Feb 25th, 2020 was already being defined by the resurgence of Disco pop. We had Don't Start Now/Blinding Lights/Adore You/Watermelon Sugar/What A Man Gotta Do/Say So/Physical/React charting before Stupid Love did. And this idea she uses her own head? She spent the whole of the TCB tour telling us that the pop sound of Chromatica was forced on her by her friends and she didn't want to even make the album. It is important how to provoke, authentically like with The Fame Monster or on devil-come-out like with ARTPOP. Yes ASIB reconstructed her career. But most songs which were mentioned are more disco-influenced and melodic synthpop, Blinding Lights melody is created by the synths and it is very melancholic, while Stupid Love is dominated by the synthesizer bass, that's a difference and the song is bright and positive. Physical is also melodic, but Stupid Love is much more electronic and choppy. Lady Gaga also said The Fame was about tits and ass. She forgot what ARTPOP is - so what?
