I think her explanation of it was what it was meant to be. Sure, but that reading is also totally consistent with the way she’s talked about it and the framing you used to justify Happy Mistake as the title lol We have forgotten our public MANNERS

Also, not you pretending The Fame or TFM arent safe as well. Again, I think because Gaga was a formative influence on a lot of folks on here, they see her early work as more experimental than it is because the sound was new to them at the time, but they don’t account for that bias when talking about her new music lol We have forgotten our public MANNERS

I also don’t really understand why folks are so prescriptive/intentionalist about interpretations. If a fan can read something into the work that is supported by the material, even if it wasn’t explicitly stated as the intention of the artist, it’s a valid interpretation. So even if Gaga never specifically cited the etymology of the word “mayhem,” the fact that it’s etymology is reflected in the work makes it a valid interpretive lens, imo. TF+ TFM are main stream pop, but don't pretend to be anything more. they are also better albums in general. And mayhem (which is perfect name of the album) end up being an MJ/80s pop inspired album. And she teased the disco influence with zombie boy during disease MV… like get a grip please we got exactly what she wanted to give us whatever you made up in your mind isn’t her problem she was obvious about this album’s inspirations and it having many sounds . and in no way or form the fame is a better album than mayhem lol

Paparazzi turning into a commentary on killing for fame, the Alejandro video attempting to tackle the aesthetics of fascism + religious iconography etc etc. Gaga’s whole schtick early on was regularly clashing the visual aesthetic of her work and the narrative context of her work with the relatively straightforward pop sound of her music. IMO, a lot of MAYHEM is actually more aesthetically uniform than her previous material (Disease + Abra’s MVs come to mind, as well as purposefully leaning into the camp of Killah + Zombieboy for live performances) Edited 2 minutes ago by Ladle Ghoulash We have forgotten our public MANNERS

If anything, it’s easier to look back with rose colored glasses if you weren’t there while something was happening.
