I love Bette but ngl, I don't see how Sister Act could work with her. 

There must have been rewrites to make it match Whoppi more.

I could see Bette doing a decent job (it's a role very much crafted for her shtick)... BUT I think she would have monopolized/eaten into the fun "ensemble" vibe of the movie (it would have been more like Bette Midler & The Sister Act lol)

It definitely ended up going to the right actress imo & you're right, it was probably tweaked

Love this. Talk about making lemonade out of lemons. Also love Keke’s comment about the consistency of the work being paramount.

This was known, no? But here’s the thing. Love Bette but she does not do ensembles like this very well imo. She has too much of a spotlight presence which suits a movie like Hocus Pocus but not Sister Act where the characters have presences of varying degrees and need attention and listening from the star. Whoopie being a comedian first naturally plays better off of her environment while taking lead confidently and that’s what made the movie work. Bette Midler next to Maggie Smith would go crazy in the wrong way. I also think Dolores needed to be Black or at least not white because  it gives another underlying tension to the nuns’ relationship to the outside world that’s mostly people of color. Since that dichotomy is unspokenly racialized (90s writing lol), I think it adds a lot to the texture of the story that Mother Superior quietly confronts some internalized racism (“modernity” in the movie) that she holds against the neighborhood they’re in and the world they say they need to help.

i also think whoopie did a good job of bringing a sense of history to her character that felt lived in and uneeding to be explained which gives her a mystique that is instantly captivating and a hallmark of her acting style 

whoopie is essential casting imO

I thought this was going to be news about Sister Act 3. They keep delaying it and putting it off. Just like Hocus Pocus 3. They need to hurry up before anyone else passes away.
