gagzus 23,772
Read my SPOILER REVIEW of Sadie Sink in Spider-Man: Brand New Day over on my substack! Putting the clipping from the article in a spoiler tag just in case! Spoiler " For decades, Jean Grey has occupied a singular place in Marvel history. She’s one of the original X-Men, a character whose empathy is as defining as her extraordinary psychic abilities, yet whose live-action legacy has often been overshadowed by the cosmic spectacle of the Phoenix Force. With her arrival in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios faced a delicate balancing act: introduce an icon without rushing towards the mythology that has so often consumed her. Spider-Man understands that challenge. Rather than treating Jean as a future event waiting to happen, the film allows audiences to meet the young woman first. Before the impossible power, before the inevitable expectations, there is simply Jean but not as we usually know her. Yes she’s intelligent but she’s also observant, menacing, scared, angry and eventually; compassionate. Carrying an emotional weight that hints at a much larger destiny. It is an introduction built on character before spectacle, and in doing so, the film lays foundations that feel remarkably confident. At the centre of that success is Sadie Sink. Already recognised for performances that balance vulnerability with emotional resilience, Sink brings a grounded humanity to Jean that immediately distinguishes this interpretation from previous live-action incarnations. She rarely overplays the character’s internal conflict, instead allowing small expressions, measured dialogue and restrained physicality to communicate someone constantly processing more than she can comfortably share. Even in quieter scenes, there’s an unmistakable sense that Jean’s mind is never entirely at rest. This review will explore every major aspect of Jean Grey’s MCU debut—from Sink’s performance and the film’s handling of Jean’s defining character beats to its early mutant mythology, X-Men lore and the breadcrumbs pointing towards Marvel’s future. Most importantly, it asks whether Spider-Man succeeds in introducing Jean Grey as a compelling character in her own right, rather than simply setting the stage for what comes next. Keep me posted My thoughts: Spoiler I was surprised with the version of Jean we got, in a way it paralelled Wanda's story (even wiht her own hex moment towards the end). Not sure how I felt about posession being such a big part of her powers, and wasn't a fan of how similar to Invisible Woman her power signature looked. I'm interested to see how this version will be when she joins the x-men after Secret Wars, since she's already been confirmed there, a much more mature and fully realized version than her comic counterpart at the time for sure. Sadie was great, I don't think any other actress of her generation would do this version of Jean justice, she has both the frailty and the toughness needed in exact proportions. It also helps that she's young, and looks evem younger than she is, she can portray and develop the character all towards the white phoenix of the crown if they wan to. I also liked how they ballanced her screen time, she was there enough to have a presence, but not too much as to overshadow the lead character.
