Future Lovers

Two 10/10s and Hung Up is one of the best uses of sampling of all time (also one of her ever bridges) but Sorry is the ONE

had to think about it hard but sorry for the same reason I like Scheiße: i love when a pop song is very "concept" reliant and nearly verges on gimmick-y. it's so silly but delivered with such conviction it lands.

Hung Up is incredible, though, and is one of the few songs i will always immediately run back to a dancefloor for no matter where im at in a club (even down the stairs)

Purrrrrr

Hung Up purely because it makes excellent use of the sample honestly?

and the song it samples is flawless to begin with but it didn't just cheaply copy it, it added to it

Hung Up becomes stuck in your head immediately, involuntarily, effortlessly.

People can tack on the ABBA asterisk at the end of that statement ^ but it doesn’t diminish the song’s impact… & the electronic additions to an already-incredible instrumental DO elevate it into something even stronger.

Not saying it is the best song of all time (or even Madonna's best song)... but it is one of those rare, impossible-to-ignore tracks.

Meanwhile, (imo) Sorry actually requires some effort to stick in your head… & wears out its welcome after a few replays.

The screws on Hung Up couldn’t be turned tighter, whereas Sorry has an “unfinished/demo” quality to it.

Both enjoyable songs… one great, the other decent.

Eh, I think Hung Up’s hook is pretty subpar and feel that its hook is actually the one I think is labored. The groove and melodic movement on Sorry’s chorus is way more satisfying, tbh.

Idk if it’s her vocals or the production (or the way those two elements blend)… but for me, a lot of Sorry feels weirdly flaccid, *especially compared to Hung Up*

BUT I do enjoy listening to it now & then. Love the use of the vocoder, especially

No joke when I say that’s legit how I feel about Hung Up’s hook (somewhat flaccid). The hook just has…no melodic or rhythmic thrust. I genuinely sometimes skip it at the top of COADF to get to the meat of the album lmao.

That being said, imo, neither are necessarily top tier Madonna singles, but both are very fun bops.

Meanwhile I stand here, thinking Hung Up is far & away the meatiest, juiciest, most succulent part of the album

My knee-jerk reaction was to agree with this, considering how many important songs she has

...but factoring in how often I listen to Hung Up, I would go so far as to say it IS, in fact, a top-tier Madonna song.

If we made a chart of all our wide-ranging opinions, we would probably find that we agree on more things than we disagree.

& yet...
