I think she is calling out a very real problem right now which is where unmotivated people are using the greater problems in capitalism as a means to excuse themselves from putting in any serious type of work. And I think she knows how hard she had to work and it probably is disheartening to her. 
 

This idea recently that you should not work hard is not leftist. It is corporate. They want people to be lazy so they have an excuse to replace you with a bot they don’t have to pay. 
 

Real leftism is being able to work at a reasonable pace that contributes to a community which 99% of you don’t actually want to do. You want the safety of performative slactivism on the internet while you sit in your safe little middle corporate democrat echo chambers and let republicans completely destroy the environment all so you can pretend you care. 
 

Hard work needs to come back. It just needs to be for the People and a better great purpose, not for billionaires and corporate interest. 
 

there is nothing wrong with understanding when you are beginning in life that you should expect some adversity to get to where you want to be. No one owes you ****. You deserve rights, access to healthcare and food and shelter, freedom, and handouts here and there to help you get there. But alot of you want most of the work done for you. Like….you seriously don’t want to go through any sort of hardship at all and that’s just not how you get somewhere. Expecting it to be some nice path all the time is just as crazy as billionaires expecting to exploit you.

I agree with much of what ur saying (to some extent, tho to be fair theres another side of the coin too)

 

Hard work has always been a thing. People thinking that right off the bat early in their career their entitled to leasure and little to no roadblocks or hardship i think is a shift in thinking that has occured in part because generations in the last few decades are the very first in human history to grow up in more comfort, and in a culture where parents do more for you, you have lots of entertainment, less chores/responsibilitles etc. For many kids under 18 now a days school is the only major stessor in terms of work and responsibilities (not saying that cant on its own be stressful, but even school is less disciplined than it used to be) then when you grow up suddenly real life responsibilities hit you much harder than it did past generations because kids now are so much more sheltered from it

 

But thats just part of it. Beyond that theres also the side of the coin that people are rightfully aware that industrialization has made it possible for us all to become wealthier and have higher standards of living, so why did the trend have to peak from 1950 to 1970 then start reversing? Why are the rich now taking almost all the economic gains? With high productivity gains why does our economic system still force us to have to work so much (and so hard) in most cases to survive not even really thrive? That was maybe justifiable 200 years ago but now we have the means to live better and work less, so why are we working more??? Why did 1 income work for a family of 4 or 5 in 1950 and now you need double income to afford a basic apartment in some cities even with no kids? 

 

Im a big believer that 2 things can be true at once and sometimes both sides can have some point... 

 

On the one hand, i am not a fan of every attitude or way of thinking that has risen in the last few decades. But on the flip side theres also valid reasons for people to be pissed and unmotivated too so its not shocking that its happening

 

I work hard at work, i made decent ok money and i only got promoted cuz I worked hard. But i can also simultaneously be pissed at the sheer degree of how hard were worked sometimes. I dont think doing the bare minimum and staying stuck at level entry pay despite how i feel about capitalism would have been in my best interests so I worked hard to move beyond that anyway despite the fact that I also think the system sucks and we shouldnt have to if the system was more fair. 

 

In some small sense I think this is what Oprah was getting at... that its not in your best interest to not work hard. This didnt necessairily seem like a commentary saying that thats how it should be. At least thats my interpretation of her words.

Here we go again with past generations projecting their ancient views on how life should be lived onto the next generation. It's a never ending, repeating cycle. Let's ignore her
