I think Katy always enjoyed being a pop star more than Rihanna, and that was very evident in her early work

rihanna has the better voice 

Katy has the better productions

their discographies are kind of equal for me, both have great songs and some fillers 

I think Katy had the more iconic imagery 

rihanna had the more iconic fashion 

id say they were both products of their time. 
 

I think Rihanna’s next album will be hyped and do well just because of her long hiatus 

I think if Katy’s next album is good it will still do bad chart wise.

Y’all are way too hard on Rihanna’s voice.

She might not be a huge vocalist but when she puts her mind to it, she delivers phenomenal vocal performances. 

Also, technique is overrated tbh. Xtina is a master at singing technique and yet she always sound horrible.

By the way, I think Russian Roulette and The One That Got Away are two of the best pop recordings in history. They deserved so much more than, let’s say, We Found Love and California Gurl

I think Rihanna has an it factor Katy doesn't have, but I see her as a performer instead of an artist. I think Katy is actually an artist, whether or not her art is good.

like when I learned Rihanna had no hand in writing Questions Existing, while singing "Dear Diary, It's Robyn. Entertaining is something I do for a living, it's not who I am." .... just singing words with no personal connection! I was gagged.

I agree with your broader point to an extent, but I also think Xtina’s technique is kind of dogshit tbh lmao. Very throaty, doesn’t often support very well, strains a lot, and carries *way* too much tension in her tongue and jaw

I think this is a difficult question because Katy’s entire career rests on the nostalgia of her past no matter how hard she tries to move on.

Rihanna’s entire string of hits and known music is nostalgia too BUT she hasn’t attempted a proper comeback for us to tell. I still personally believe she may never come back or if she does she absolutely will not be successful. Her name alone doesn’t carry music because her song for Smurfs did so bad and sounded terrible but we gloss over that.

But based on ANTi, she absolutely was done with being a popstar by that point and wanted to experiment. Plus pop music doesn’t work like it did when she was at her peak, songwriting camps arent a thing much anymore, artists are pretty much expected to be involved in the creative process more and people value songwriters and/or vocalists now as minimum requirements. Not to mention there was a video of her performing live recently and she was just lazy live, which is a big no no nowadays too.

So until she tries to make a pop comeback we won’t know but as of NOW? Katy honestly because at least she is STILL a popstar, whereas Rihanna is now a business entrepreneur who used to make music.
