Even Good For the Soul, One Step Away, and Love Sensation move me more than L4L. L4L, while good, is very generic, paint by numbers, and oddly feels somewhat emotionally sterile in spite of the “soulful” aesthetic. Best song on Rebel Shart, but not really saying much

Well if we're linking soulfulness to genuine emotional context & lyricism (rather than the physiological, involuntary urges to dance & feel alive), you're right, LFL not a profoundly deep song.

& fwiw, I actually enjoy The Test 💚

The lyrics are maybe a bit clumsy, but Lourdes’ voice sounds beautifully mellow & the two of them singing together makes me happy. Lordes being a young girl during the first COADF era… & now singing about how “I’m not so different, time is knocking on my doorstep.” 🥹

Two women, seeing each other for who they are, & how they’ve shaped each other. I get choked up.

Off topic but your comment reminded me of that, and it works perfectly with this thread — a few days ago there was a thread where people complained Gaga didn’t let her songs breathe/build themselves à la CII (just like how they ask for rock music) but the only times she kinda did (Aura, Highway Unicorn etc.), they complain about those exact parts even though they’re really short

I feel like some Gaga fans have this perception of what a rock era would look like that is completely different.

I would love an entire record with stuff like her Sweet Sounds of Heaven collab with The Rolling Stones, but I don't think many monsters would appreciate that.

I personally have never linked soul purely to the urge to dance & feel alive. Like soul was born from gospel music and the hope for liberation coming out of the civil rights movement. 
Like if it doesn't impact you emotionally, it's not soul and it's got no soul.

Agree, I remember that some of the fans were upset that she listened to Michael and decided to not make Mayhem sound entirely like Perfect Celebrity and it ended up being one of the least streamed songs on the album despite being the fourth song on the track list.

My bad, I meant to define soulfulness as inspiring physiological, involuntary EMOTIONAL urges (regardless of context & independent of specific lyricism).

More to do with the way a song's vocals, production, etc awaken certain feelings that couldn't otherwise be provoked.

So yes, I think you're right, soul is absolutely linked to emotion, but for some people (like myself) emotion isn't always definable or reachable with lyrics or context, but with sound(s)

The background vocalist in the second half (up to the very end) of LFL FEELS very soulful to me. Whether or not its actually soulful by everyone's definition is not for me to say, but it really REALLY does the job for me

The woman's "no, no-oh, oh-oh"s don't necessarily mean anything in the context of the song, but they inspire invaluable feelings that otherwise wouldn't be felt.

Add to that (what I consider to be) a very dance-able, infectious instrumental... & I think you have the best song Madonna released during the 2010s (or 2020s, so far).

For me, the closest I come to those involuntary emotional highs on CII are Love Sensation

I think fans want pop songs with electric guitars and dark imagery. 

 If she decides to put out a rock album one day, I hope it's psychedelic rock.  Lots of instruments and a 60s, 70s aesthetic.
