I agree with this assessment. It’s why I think it’s sooo mood dependent bc if I want a sequencing journey I think II is stronger but individual tracks? COADF ofc

I'm happy for Madonna's success, but the album is just... okay... The jaded part of me thinks its just people wanting it to be better than it actually is. More power to them, I guess

COADF is decent/good, but is largely emotionally sterile. Well constructed album and great tour, but I, ironically, think the critique you laid out for the sequel absolutely applies to the original: people were praising a decent/good pop record because it was a return to form and I think it’s been largely overrated in hindsight and that probably at least partially colors my fatigue surrounding the album. I also think Hung Up is insanely overrated. But ramblings aside: the new album just feels more emotionally relevant to where I am in my life and the OG has just never really clicked with me emotionally in spite of it being an objectively well constructed pop record. Hope you understand, NUTBUTT It uses the sample to glorious effect, sonically surpassing the original ABBA song & leaving us with one of Madonna's most effortlessly-enjoyable tracks. It reinforces its own hype with each listen. Sorry is also good... but not as good as Hung Up. Future Lovers, meanwhile, is unworthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as those other two songs, you grinning crackhead

GGG blows Hung Up out of the water, imo. The instrumental is great, but the whole song is structured around a sample (ABBA) and an interpolation (Love Song) and I don’t really think it elevates either. I think it’s a good pop song, but it probably wouldn’t even make my top 10-15 Madonna singles, much less Madonna songs in general. 5 minutes ago, NUTELLA said: Sorry is also good... but not as good as Hung Up. IMO, Sorry takes the overall formula of HU, but actually does it on its own terms: with a memorable, original melody, genuine emotional stakes, and great production. 6 minutes ago, NUTELLA said: Future Lovers, meanwhile, is unworthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as those other two songs, you grinning crackhead The way FL might even be the best of the three songs I mentioned. The “in the eminence of its brilliance” and the way the swirling arpeggiators build towards the climactic end? Better than any single moment in either of the two aforementioned tracks. I agree with this but would put Jump and Forbidden Love over Future Lovers, Future Lovers and Hung Up are good but there are much better songs on the album than it. Also Get Together is very overrated as well.
