Former Senate leader, current Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is reportedly dead. And has been for over 3 weeks now. Allegedly, the Republicans are covering it up and keeping him on artificial life support until the August 3rd Deadline passes that would trigger a special election to replace him between November and January- although he was already leaving his seat after the midterms. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/06/us/politics/mitch-mcconell-health-hospitalization.html He was hospitalised on June 14th, with some reports ive seen suggesting that paramedics had to perform cpr for over 20 minutes before he arrived in hospital and that he's was intubated (unable to breath on his own). In Kentucky, for him to be declared legally dead and have life support removed it would require her sign off... And unless his wife comes back to the US, there's very little routes possible to having him declared dead as she will have power of attorney over all medical decisions. I don't know about the legal side but surely the sign off would really just be in the event of taking someone who is technically still alive, off the life support. Many on the far right hate McConnell, so they may be happy, but the incumbent Gov of KY is a Dem and he gets to appoint McConnell’s replacement until a special election is scheduled, so the Rs probably wouldn’t be thrilled to have their Senate majority chipped away at temporarily. From what I've read, and its important to remember this is deep red bible belt kentucky, the law makes it near impossible for the medics to turn off life support without family consent. I saw someone, claiming to be a dr, say that its only possible to overrule family (without a protracted court case which would go past August 3rd anyway) in the case of total brainsteam death. But to prove that, they'd need to conduct medical tests which would require his wife's consent. Basically the professionals can't do **** without family consent here because its not a case of refusing treatment, its a case of refusing to end treatment.
