I think it’s a bit (very) generous on their part BUT I have to say the album is a nice surprise! After hearing the three “singles” I had lost all hope — they really made choices with those :trollga:

I honestly can’t really see giving this album less than a 7.5, so idk how generous it really is lol

it does not compare to confessions 1 for me at all. id give it a 7 and even thats generous. i think the critics are just easy on her because shes old and shes obviously trying hard and serving **** and has some good will going for her.

Pitchfork have savaged every album she's released this century.

They're not going easy on her, they have a 26 year hate boner for her.

I mean, pitchfork notoriously hate women in pop.

If they're giving her a good score, its a good score.

You just read as a bitter hater trying to push the usual tired ageist bigotry. "She’s bad but no one will say because she's old". Genuinely laughing at you here

Yes bc the critics have always been kind to Madonna about her age. Honestly piss off. Like it’s the music business. Every major artist benefits from image work which is a combination of many things including good pr and the material itself, but good pr has never stopped critics from being honest about an album, too, even if how they phrase that critique is less harsh. For instance, ARTPOP got Gaga lacerations bc her pr was in the toilet but Chromatica which is a largely pretty good album got her a lot of “she’s back on the dance floor!” praises that were a combination of the good will from ASIB. Very dismissive to say “oh they’re taking pity on an old lady still trying” like, lord, listen to yourself.

Idk, I really enjoy it, but I can’t honestly put it in the upper echelon of her discog because, while I love it as a body of work, I don’t think on a song to song basis it really stacks up to some of her best work (ROL, Music, LAP, AL). It’s easily the best thing she’s done since Confessions and I think it’s a great addition to her catalogue, though.

I think it's an onion album, over time people will see layers and layers to it and the reputation will grow bigger

That implies that I agree with their scores for those Gaga albums (I don’t lol). I think 8.1 for CONFESSIONS II is fair, but I think MAYHEM deserves at least 8.5, ASIB north of 8, same with TFM, Joanne prob like 7.5.

I actually agree with these except TFM which imo is an 8.5-9

idk I think if you remove fanaticism, a lot of their reviews are thought out. They’re not perfect but I think they’re seldom flippant (and it’s clear when they are :laughga:)

I’d agree with this score. Maybe 8.5. Its not perfect and some songs are thinner than others, the transitions are a little forced at times for something billed as a playthrough, and the second half has good songs but I think doesn’t quite find the same footing as the first handful of tracks

I'm gonna be honest, some of you seem a bit salty Confessions 2 got a slightly higher score than Mayhem but the score is well deserved for several reasons. First of all, Madonna is much older than Gaga, thus making a creative comeback on this level more impressive. Secondly, the emotional weight of some of the tracks on Confessions 2 like Fragile and Betrayal are simply beyond anything Mayhem has to offer.

Madonna and Gaga are two of my favorite artists of all time but even putting aside impact and longevity, Gaga will never be on Madonna's level for the simple fact that she isn't capable of writing songs as emotionally poten as "Oh Father, "The Power of Goodbye or "Fragile"
