I suppose, but I think the central issue is more that the onus shouldn’t even fall on the consumer to have to go the lengths of ripping and storing a file (especially in the era of physical and digital media ownership overlapping) and consumers should simply own the files, not access to a file on a cloud server that businesses can arbitrarily cut off. 

Circling back to the repo analogy: while there is precedent for loss of purchased goods due to financial hardship, I also think digital consolidation has made it easier to more arbitrarily restrict access a consumer has to what would’ve once been a good that, even accounting for format obsolescence, it would’ve been reasonable for them to expect the company they bought it from not to interrupt their access to.
 

For example: if you buy movies on Apple TV, because you don’t technically own it in a tangible (ie your only access to it is streaming it from a cloud server, you cannot download or store it in an application that isn’t encrypted by Apple etc), Apple can restrict your access to your entire movie collection because your payment on a $2.99 App Store subscription bounced on your Apple account. That’s not only disproportionately punitive, it also reflects the extent of how contingently they view your “ownership” of a good you paid face value for from them (which is to say I think they view you as essentially leasing it from them on an extended line of credit, so you don’t functionally own it). I think that’s completely unacceptable and, in spite of its remote similarity to previous models, I think is actually pretty novel/unique to the streaming era and something that needs to be reformed.

It really sucks. If you can do it ASAP, depends on your location, since for Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, the store are going to close next month. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will close starting late 2026. In all other countries, PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027.

Their current basic consoles are offered in disc less form.

Coming back to this comment because Xbox has just announced you can transfer disc files to digital files on their next console  they’re preemptively preparing to follow suit it seems now rip.

The thing is, I don’t even have the consoles yet!! I’ve always asked for one but my parents never cared enough to gift me one of those (the only console they bought specifically for me was the PS4..). Now that I have my own money I’ll start to save up for a PS3 and I will finally be able to play those games I’ve had in my shelfs for collection purposes.

you forget one thing, Sony can ban your account and they can ban your PS itself and make it a junk system, so not only they can revoke your license at any moment (which now they did to 500 movies in their service), they can ban your almost $1K machine.

Prices of consoles are too high. Don’t own the games you pay for. Get banned for piracy or whatever else they want to.

DVDs rot, they do not last forever, but it is very tragic... I guess people have to save their favorite media to usb keys or something, idek. It's disgusting how they will sell a product (ie a film) and then a few years later lose the licensing and delete it from your library... should be illegal.

DVDs and CDs can last decades if you take care of them, same with vinyls. I keep mine in the original case and holders, and I have CDs that are probably older than me that still work.

There should be a balance between having digital media and physical media. We don't need to get rid of something completely, but I guess I get what you mean. I'd rather be able to play something without wifi than not be able to play it at all just because I don't have  the super Nintendo playstation sony plus subscription to play games offline.
