Helxig 45,427
Diamond Heart and John Wayne are the fun, upbeat earworms of the album that people would've most recognised as Gaga. I think PI was a good choice but it was a bit too long and too 'loud' for a lot of people. It would've been great as a second single. Then mixing it up with something like DIC, an then finally giving the ballad MR. I mean MR did very well anyway so it could've come at any time I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
chathonnete 1,020
1st : Diamond Heart (although it would've flopped) 2nd : Million Reasons promo single : Perfect Illusion 3rd : John Wayne
Lickitung 230
I love the album, but I don't think it has any great single option I'd go with the title track, though. Easy a top 3 Gaga song for me and much better than Million Reasons. In my little alice world, Joanne is up there with Gaga's greatest hits edit: I'm ignoring piano version since... well... it sucks Edited June 28 by Lickitung 1
onionring 970
Diamond Heart is truly one of her songs. I'm surprised it's getting that much love. It's not terrible, but it's the epitome of SKIP 1
pucihendzap 445
Perfect illusion is the same scenario as disease in my opinion, too ambitious sounds for leads. Like them both. I think abra is more lead recognized. For Joanne, maybe dic or diamond would be better?
joannethenight 6,055
If Diamond Heart were lead single, you all would be saying it should've been Perfect Illusion 🌹 2 1
loveandpeace 1,844
Perfect Illusion was always the right choice cause it feels like the perfect transition between the wild Gaga of ARTPOP and the more introspective Gaga of Joanne! JazzGa 14,654
Thank God I logged back in, otherwise who would vote for Sinner's Prayer? WHO? Anderson123 42,742
Perfect Illusion was the right choice. Y’all would’ve flipped if A-Yo, Million Reasons or Sinner’s Prayer were lead singles.
JohnWayne92 2,359
The only answer is Ayo or John Wayne She needed something that the GP could have ate up. Ayo is kinda a boom clap song in the vein of older Taylor Swift and shows the "country" side of the album. John Wayne would have been the most Gaga song to lead with. It has a country reference and slight country guitars so leading into Million Reasons, Ayo, etc would have been easier. Perfect Illusion is a banger but it doesnt fully encompass the sound of Joanne for me. Edited June 28 by JohnWayne92

I think it has the biggest hit potential if it has been given the right 100% agree. If A-YO had gotten all the radio promo PI did, and a proper music video, and didn’t have to compete with Million Reasons, it could have been an easy top 10 hit as the lead.
Lextyr97 20,820
Diamond Heart should’ve been the lead. It also needed a guitar solo or something.
SevenWonder 4,755
While I don't think any song would've smashed, it's gotta be Diamond Heart. Great lyrics. Great chorus. The hook is bigger and more satisfying to my ears. It also feels slightly more radio friendly than PI. It's the song I listen to most off Joanne. (Fwiw, I love PI. But I just don't think it's a great single choice.)
