PartySick 174,134
The minimum wage would be raised to $25 an hour under a new bill to be introduced by Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) on Thursday, in a bid to enthuse the working-class voters who have abandoned the Democratic Party. Murphy, whose name is frequently floated as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, said he is pushing his party to take more aggressive stances on affordability, following its punishing defeats in the 2024 elections. The bill would incrementally increase the minimum wage from its current rate of $7.25, with the first jump to $12 an hour in the first year of enactment. Major corporations would have six years to work up to a $25 minimum wage, while smaller employers would have a 13-year runway. The legislation would also do away with subminimum wages for tipped workers, such as restaurant servers, youth workers and workers with disabilities. Nearly half of the American workforce makes less than $25 an hour. X Whimsical bitch 8 2
PartySick 174,134
$25 an hour is a great START. It'll be a drag out brawl just to get that but I think momentum is finally shifting in the US. Maybe making our first trillionaire wasn't a mistake after all. He isn't even a trillionaire anymore btw 'cause SpaceX lost $400 billion in value Whimsical bitch 1
Helxig 45,582
In a dream world, AMAZING, but they're probably just pulling stunts to get votes Also I agree with getting rid of tipping. That **** is a mess I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
River 128,532
Minimum wage is a good start but dangerous at the same time, because if not done right and the bill is not preventing all the loopholes, it can be used for exploitation.. and most of the times, when it should be adjusted to the new cot of life, it's either not done, or done too late. Minimum wage should be corresponding for the kind of job. But well, it's a start, especially in the US. What are the chances that it would pass? Bronco 27,414
The obsession on the American left with constantly raising the minimum wage is ignoring why they feel the need to get higher wages. Prices. The solution isn't get paid more in the same system, that just means costs go up and nothing changes. The solution needs to be actual targeted measures to reduce the cost burden on renting/home ownership, food costs, medical bills etc. The gays know how to party
Roughhouse Dandy 13,831
"But prices will just go up" is mostly an excuse. When Florida passed the minimum wage increase, they were saying the same thing, but a McDonald's burger didn't start costing $30 like they promised would happen. However, this is a bandaid on a bullet hole that 1) probably won't pass 2) won't fix the cost of living 3) is 100% a chicken bone being thrown to the masses in a panic after this latest election because they know the population is tired of their complicity and are now hungry for actual progressives like DSA members. Don't fall for it. Elect people who actually stand on business. Throw these f*ckers out. If minimum wage kept up with productivity and inflation, it'd actually be closer to $40 an hour according to some knowledgeable people. $25 is a good start though. 1 hour ago, Roughhouse Dandy said: "But prices will just go up" is mostly an excuse. Prices in Florida remain high compared to other states but they he disparity isn't any bigger than it ever was before. 1 hour ago, Roughhouse Dandy said: is 100% a chicken bone being thrown to the masses in a panic after this latest election because they know the population is tired of their complicity and are now looking to actual progressives like DSA members. Absolutely agree with this too. But it gets the conversation started on a national level in a meaningful way. Hopefully, at least. What better time to talk about a livable wage than just before an election that'll hinge on two things: the unpopularity of the current president and his party and the fact that half of Americans are being priced out of surviving. But again. $40 an hour, but you're still ****ed if you lose your job due to a lack of an adequate safety neck $40 an hour, but there's no rent controls so the landlord has just increased the rent to profit off of the high wage $40 an hour, but you still have a $1000 deductible for perscriptions $40 an hour, but your now paying more in taxes to fund the US's obsession with conflicts. Its not fixing the problems, its wallpapering over the cracks. The gays know how to party 3
Bronco 27,414
I'm also going to add something because it's showing up in a lot of Western economies atm including the UK & Florida (which has been used an example in the thread). Higher minimum wages are driving up youth unemployment (among other factors squeezing entry level jobs). Because employers don't want to pay the same wage to an untrained 18 year old working their first job as they would for a 30+ year old with 10 years experience. Florida has a 10.5% youth unemployment rate (16-24 yr olds). Up 1% on the year. So this is why its really important that the focus isn't just "pay me more" its got to be about improving the system. A higher min wage without steps taken to protect entry level roles from AI etc is a recipe for disaster. Because without actual systemic change, this is no different to what the boomers did to fund their lifestyles. It's robbing Peter to pay Paul. Wages and cost of goods dont move in perfect tandem (if they did we wouldnt have major fluctuations and long term discrepancies between inflation vs wages) Minimum wage does not affect import prices and also not everyone makes minimum wage which means higher earners may not get a proportional increase which means people at the bottom may get a 100% increase but by the time you get to someone making $100K annually maybe the trickle up only gets them a 20% increase At the end of the day tho imo higher minimum wages do very little to adress income gaps from the super wealthy because corporations will adjust to keep their profits and stocks up. You need higher capital gains taxes om wealthy individuals to truly bridge the gap Imo, what higher minimum wages do is reduce the wealth gap between the low income and the upper middle class. The bottom 50% gain purchasing power as their pay rises more than Inflation and the top 40% to top 45% potentially loose purchasing power as the inflation from this will be higher than their pay gain For the ultrawealthy gap, u need other mechanisms, this doesnt really work to spread wealth from billionaires Edited June 27 by Economy
JoeCool 1,080
It sounds great in theory but I just see more and more businesses going all in on A.I to avoid paying employees. It was like with the Affordable Care Act. Yes great full time employees now have to be offered health care coverage. But many businesses cut employee's hours to part time to get around it. Or in my case laid me off. I used to work for a small business in the early 2010s Edited June 27 by JoeCool
Lord Mayhem 3,583
Cool...but each state has a different cost of living and the minimum wage should reflect that. $25 an hour will hit different in Bucktown, Kentucky than in Los Angeles, CA. It needs to be a standard percentage based on state and county cost of living averages. Clean and simple...no politics or biased efforts
