Texas State Board of Education Votes To Require Millions Of Students To Study Bible

The Texas State Board of Education has approved a proposal that will establish lists of required reading — including Bible verses alongside classic titles — for its K-12 English and literature curriculum.

The plan will impact more than 5 million public school students, as Texas emerges as a leader in a national conservative effort to infuse Christian teachings into American classrooms.

Multiple titles will be mandated for each grade, and each one must be read “in its entirety.” The effort goes far beyond a 2023 law that requires at least one state board-approved literary work be taught in each grade level.

At the same meeting Friday, the school board also approved a rewrite of the state’s social studies curriculum, focusing more on Texas and US history and deemphasizing some teachings about global history and cultures. The change will eliminate a sixth grade “World Cultures” course and significantly expand lessons on communism.

The proposals have sharply divided teachers, parents and community members — hundreds of whom appeared before the school board this week to voice their concern and enthusiasm.

So like, are the students going to read all the passages about loving one another, helping the poor, being generous, being loving, not judging one another, and the part where Jesus chases the moneylenders out of the temple? Because it might help the adults to read those parts too...

I mean, Texas is a red state, the majority voted for this, so they will have to deal with it, but I can assume that the majority wanted it, so honestly, what's the problem? this is democracy, if you're not a fan, move to another state or a different country for all I care or do your best next time to make the dems win in Texas.

This is the part of democracy that sucks. People are typically not very smart and so they push politicians to do stupid things

 

No one religious ideology should be pushed in school (assuming thats what they are doing and not some part of historical reading)

 

But stupidity goes far beyond a bias for some grade 12 reading. This is why we are not dealing with big issues that will come back to bite harder later and kick the can down the road (in addition to corruption/bribes which is a seperate issue). Democracies do not encourage hard tough decisions to be made so they are not made

 

I know im going a bit off topic but kinda related to ur general comment on democracy. Its very hailed compared to past forms of government but its a system still saturated with weaknesses and flaws because of human nature

 

Back to ur point as well, democracies also mean the largest groups carry the most say. So yes, if most are red and want this thats often whats gonna happen.

For me personally, religion should be banned completely and we as a society should just move on from this nonsense.

It's an awful decision, but it's what the people wanted, what they voted.. they will complain about it later as usual, but atm, let them eat the cake I guess.

Texas is also a state where voter turnout is very low. It’s more purple than red.

I wouldn't actually mind if bible and all major holy texts were taught in a literature class or something...like "here are the foundational texts of the major civilizations across the globe" like why can't they do it like that? these teachers are not going to university for three years to teach children that a man seriously rose from the dead

They voted red, so they voted for this, they probably didn't know because they voted red blindly like they are in a cult.
