Controversial Gaga Takes (Music Editions)

Heavy Metal Lover is THE worst song on Born This Way and pure filler.

Her music is great but she could’ve been 100x more amazing if she had kept experimenting after ARTPOP. She’s never reached such a peak of experimentation since.

Harlequin is one of her best albums and absolutely clears her old albums ten fold.

She also NEEDS to have female producers because men just don’t understand her vision I feel. I mean it even took a man to convince her to even go back to pop music which is saying something. Her music is very much from a man’s perspective in every way which is a point of contention for me. I’m hoping motherhood makes her experiment more.

Heavy Metal Lover is truly truly horrible. Like it's probably her worst. It's boring and meandering to me.

TheARTPOPball

I don’t find requiem that interesting as I don’t listen to live albums and getting thru the tracklist was kinda a snooze fest tbh.

Adorable

Indeed, insane

But still adorable

Well I still love Hair a lot my taste has just changed a bit over the past 15 years and I don't love it as much as I did whe I was young, my favs from BTW now are definitely FOHL, BJ + AF, Government Hooker, Electric Chapel, You And I, Bloody Mary and Scheibe. You are also somewhat insane I mean how can someone not like Judas one of her best songs?

This is one of my biggest issues with both Joanne and Chromatica (and Mayhem to a degree) they were both very safe for the genres they explored and toned down. They had much more conventional song structures, the beats never really went anywhere most of the time or built with the song (looking at you especially Chrome). Also I feel like both albums are things that could have been made by other artists and it was clear she was following the shorter song trend with Chromatica as well. (or Bloodpop I guess)

I wouldn't say this is true for all especially Redone and DJWS they seemed to understand her vision for her music and performance and what I immediately think back to is how Boys Boys Boys when Redone (and Gaga) talked about how it was like a metal song in a pop song's body. I think that encapsulated Gaga quite well because she always had a rock n roll edge to her even though she was making pop music. Also Gaga's influences from other countries and especially euro pop is all over TFM and BTW as well so I would say those producers understood her and what she wanted, Mark Ronson and Bloodpop obviously did not I mean Mark compared songs from Joanne to Alejandro and Bad Romance which is ridiculous and Bloodpop was the main producer on Chromatica and kind of forced her to make the album so.....

This exactly, I feel like her discography is the least impressive part of her career. Given how talented she is, it's really disappointing.

Time. It will not wait, no matter how hard you hold on...

I get that she wants to be a strong legacy artist and be huge so she has to appeal to everyone. Plus the rebrand HAD to happen in order for her to stay big.

But there’s an alternate timeline somewhere where she said “f*ck it” after being the biggest popstar in the world for almost 5 years and just started making experimental dance music and stopped being for the public. Probably ultimately ending up as an indie act.

I desperately hoped for her to go the Björk route with LG7, but seeing how MAYHEM ended up being her safest, and my least favorite album of hers yet, I think I let go of that hope for good.

I need actual "dark poetry" to be impressed, not insipid disco tracks about werewolves and ghouls.

This was another issue I had with Mayhem, the metaphors with "darker imagery" all seemed very surface level with zombies, werewolves, beasts, witchery and being a "killer". I mean a "zombieboy" just being a guy she likes who stays up late and spends lots of time near the bar or comparing a wild lover to a beast or werewolf is quite surface level and basic as well. I feel the metaphors with darker imagery were done better on The Fame Monster and even parts with religious metaphors were done better on BTW. For example dance in the dark, it uses nighttime darkness as a metaphor for the subjects insecurity and shows how she feels more free and comfortable at night to be herself or Monster with it being about a guy who's not good for her and a guy who is predatory that she tries to fight off with lots of descriptive lyrics, even songs that are less metaphorical or don't use tradional "dark imagery" as a metaphor like So Happy I Could Die or Alejandro do this better and the extra melancholic tone (of the lyrics and Gaga's voice) also add a lot to it as well. As for religious imagery I think the best comparison for GOE would be Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary is all about Mary Magdalene and how Gaga thinks she must have felt in the moments leading up to Jesus's crucifixion and death and how she was both divinely human but also had to be strong as a disciple. You also most likely would not pick up on that on a first listen due to the deep metaphor as well, GOE is just about how she is tempting the guy like the snake tempted Adam and Eve and with the poison apple and how it will lead to a one night stand (a metaphor commonly used in many other recent pop songs as well). The closest you get to a deeper metaphor is Disease or maybe Abra.

Bloody Matt

Free Woman is great, one of the best songs on Chromatica and hearing it live at TCBT was a moment. @Blackout19 :trollga:

Spoiler

I still think it would have been even better with different production but still great nonetheless.
