Aretha has always traditionally held the #1 spot in terms of 'Greatest Singer Of All Time'. But as more and more time passes after Whitney's death, it seems like the number of people who place her at number 1 is growing. Who's the best?

NUTELLA

Whitney Houston has some classic songs but her nickname "the voice" is baffling- great vocalist but overrated as one

Aretha any day

Whitney is an amazing singer.

But Aretha was an amazing singer with a far more impactful/emotive voice in my opinion.

Like Whitney sounds amazing on I Will Always Love You, but if you compare her to Dolly singing it - so much of the emotion feels missing in my opinion.

I'm not going to pick a #1 best singer because that's a fool's errand and depends on so many variables and how you'd weigh each of these factors. I'd basically name several Opera singers first there, just because the difficulty regarding technique... so I'm going for my answer re: the question in the title. Love me some Whitney, she was phenomenal, but it's Aretha all the way, baby!

I agree. Whitney never topped the emotion in performances like this

However, I voted Whitney. At her peak her voice was just....sent from God. I'm not religious but performances like this just make you believe.

Aretha wins on pure emotional delivery but Whitney wins on making you believe that something bigger is in the room with you

Lord Mayhem

Whitney had a sweet yet powerful voice with clarity...

Aretha was a powerhouse soul singer for a different sound and generation

Whitney had more wide international appeal and imo has more known hits and songs covered to this day than Aretha

Aretha had the better voice imo, but they’re not THE very best ever (like AT ALL), they’re very overrated in that specific regard (SNS)

Aretha was an ass though, so I’m voting for Whitney :trollga:

Aretha’s voice clears, her discog clears, and her musicianship clears. Whitney’s got a phenomenal voice and a wonderful collection of singles, but Aretha’s got stone cold *classic* albums

Whitney is it for me. Her voice spoke to my very soul. Even as a teen - when I was into indie rock - I'd listen to Whitney's ballads in utter awe.

Aretha is fantastic, but I've never connected with her voice or her music.
