Why are songs so short these days?

i miss the days, when the songs were 4 minutes long. 
i listen to a lot of music from the 80s, and I enjoy it when I see that the songs are at least 4 minutes long.
i listened to Bebe Rexha's new album and almost all the songs are 2 minutes long.

Shorter song = more streams/replays

I don't use a streaming service BUT I don't really think song length matters in general, if it's good enough/has enough replay value 🔂

TikTok, streaming, short attention span of this new generation. If you want songs longer than 4 minutes unfortunately you have to search outside of pop music.

It's purely about streams and charts.

Streaming, getting more plays, listening habits. Also probably cost related reasons with tracklists getting longer and longer.

Most songs from the 50s and 60s were like this, twoish minutes was the standard.

Music labels don't care about art they care about is what the data says, and money. The answer is always what makes the most money. Always

First of all they have some studies or data telling them that people's attention spans are too short now so if they want lots of money they need to make songs shorter (because if they skip too fast it doesn't count as a stream). And also shorter songs = more songs streamed per hour = more money (and also more time to push new songs to market more music to more people). It's as simple as that

Also they are pushing this mindset HARD onto the artists. A fewof them have spoken out about how labels won't let them make longer songs, the labels tell them it needs to become a TikTok trend within a certain time frame, it needs x amount of traction by a certain date or they won't bother promoting it. It's all ****ed tbh

Olivia Rodrigo’s Cure was like 5 mins long. Same for Madonna’s opener I Feel So Free. 

Even the biggest hit of the year - Choosin Texas is almost 4 mins long.

So there are still plenty long songs in pop music
