REALITY 79,945
3 hours ago, Ladle Ghoulash said: I think the difference has more to do with intent and framing, tbh. ARTPOP was clearly aiming for being sonically cutting edge, so when it sounds familiar or very of its time musically, that intent can be weighed against the familiarity of the music, whereas music that is retro is usually deliberately gunning to sound like stuff from the past, so if it sounds like a quality recreation of the 80s, it’s doing its job right. That's fair, but it's all subjective at the end of the day. I don't think ARTPOP's production sounds dated, even looking at it through the lens of wanting it to be "sonically cutting edge." Like I said, if anything, I think it stays ahead of its time, which is validated by the fact that it's become a cult classic. The whole "retro" vs "dated" debate still comes down to semantics imo. Because, yes, while "retro" music usually intends to sound like stuff from the past, you could just as easily apply the "dated" label to that if you—as the listener—simply don't like that kind of stuff. When you hear or read about music critiques, you rarely see people critique something using "retro" in a negative way. It's usually "dated." Sneaky Oliver 22,905 Posted yesterday at 11:33 AM Share Posted yesterday at 11:33 AM The way he said she’s a “maker” really resonated with me… I totally get what he meant. The thing with Gaga’s discography is that there are cracks, there are flaws but you can tell she’s the one who made them and that’s the beauty of it, it’s not overly produced or extremely polished into perfection, it’s rather organic and natural
Holocene 62 Posted yesterday at 02:06 PM Share Posted yesterday at 02:06 PM (edited) when he says "some are like managers and hope the ones around them can create", does he refer to Beyonce? Edited yesterday at 02:07 PM by Holocene
