Jewels N' Drugs Meaning

So Jewels N' Drugs is easily my least favorite song off of ARTPOP and I am not a huge fan of it but I wanted to take a crack at figuring out the songs meaning(as shallow/simple as it may be):partysick:

So firstly I think that the 3 rappers (T.I, Too $hort, Twistas) verses are mainly just about hustling/working hard, "getting bitches/hoes" and flexing their riches and are very surface level and don't contribute much in terms of a deeper meaning overall.

However I think there is a little bit more to Gaga's lyrics in the verses, bridge and chorus so let's examine:

[Chorus: Lady Gaga]
Don't want your jewels, I want your drugs
Don't want your money, want your love
Don't want your jewels, I want your drugs
Want your jewels, I want your drugs
Don't want your money, want your love

According to DJ White Shadow the idea for the song came to Gaga after Gaga asked Tara to pass her the weed on the tour bus and Tara misheard her and passed her a bracelet instead and Gaga replied "I don't want the jewels I want the drugs", hence the name of the song, I also think Gaga here is saying she want's drugs/connection because doing drugs with people is a common social activity and can be used to help people bond so she is saying she values connections with friends and people close to her over riches and wealth (this idea is also explored on the song ARTPOP).

[Verse 2: Lady Gaga]
I admit that my habit's expensive
And you may find it quite offensive
But I won't die at the hands of another
I'm your mother, sister, your father, brother
This family is stupid attractive
If you've surveyed the way we've acted
Keep it comin', I'm comin' around like your friend now
I think you should shut up and sit down

Here Gaga admits to having an expensive drug problem and says that if she dies that she is okay with it being due to drugs and she is committed to her addiction.(Could also be seen as her saying she is loyal to the people close to her) and the second part Gaga talks about a family/crew built around friendship and loyalty which is common in hip hop culture and here Gaga seems to be celebrating it and that chosen family dynamic.

[Bridge: Lady Gaga]
Jewels and drugs, play that hustle
Smother 'em if you wanna be bad
Slap honey on a young pancake
We know how to make that money
Jewels and drugs, play that hustle
Smother 'em if you wanna be bad
Ain't nothin' if it ain't family
We know how to make that money

Here Gaga is celebrating hustle culture and working hard to achieve your dreams and working your way to the top from nothing (which is something she obviously did and is another strong aspect of hip hop culture) and as for the "Slap honey on a young pancake" line this can easily carry sexual connotations but for the sake of

making it fit better with the rest of this parts meaning, I think it would make more sense for it to mean the idea of initiating a new member into the club/family by adorning them with jewels or a symbol of their chosen family/group and here Gaga also reiterates her loyalty to the "family" and how hustling is important to making your money.

Interestingly in the past Gaga has praised the aspect in Hip hop of "eating **** in the industry" while coming from nothing, working hard for your success and then gloating about and celebrating it because you have earned the right to do so and she said it inspired her own work and her approach towards her career/outlook:

So in short the song (well mainly Gaga's parts) is mainly about celebrating certain aspects of hip hop culture and about how she chooses connection and friendship over material wealth and riches.

I always read it as her send up of hard working people in general. Celebrating how she’s a hard working popstar.

Plus I’m sure at one point she said it was about her family, and how they came from hard working backgrounds to get where they are.

It should also be of note that the rappers she collaborated with were all self made men from hard backgrounds and also; they weren’t afraid to be a part of Gaga’s sphere which included LGBTQ+ people and fans — which is a reason why the Kendrick collaboration fell through. Because notoriously, Kendrick’s camp and team didnt want him associated with gay people and wanted Gaga to be “less gay” on their collaborations and when she was gonna promote it. Same thing was a problem with Fame Kills tour before it got cancelled.

It’s basically her traditional view of rejecting fame and celebrity. The chorus tells you all that; choosing drugs over jewels, choosing love over money etc

Also I don’t think she means LITERAL drugs though, since in the early days she used to call music a drug. Plus it aligns with what she said the the SXSW festival interview;

”if I have to be anything else other than myself. I will quit”

It‘s interesting the point about the rap verses, because on the rewind remind, it reads like there‘s a kingpin triptych that explores or illustrates their respective lens on the “drug” deal … in a genre-signature storytelling structure …

T.I.‘s is a line for line, bar for bar, frame for frame, gaze into the Atlanta Trap for the Gaga-adjacent lane … the central thesis of his verse is authenticity …  his issue is, effectually, paper gangstas perpetrating in perpetuity

Spoiler

[Intro: T.I.]
Yeah
It's about that time, yeah, haha
Time to take off, partner, alright?
Hustle Gang, uh-huh, G-D-O-D
Get your doe or die, partner
Yup, leggo (Ayy)

Still Bankhead, shawty, yeah, you know what it is
Pockets full of numbers, rubber bands, and bills
Came up from 'round, that's a Dandiville
They finna do a deal, about 60 mil'
You ain't lived that life, you perpetrate
You wasn't really trappin', servin' birds of yay
You ain't have to beat no murder case
Man, you probably couldn't get a O of every day
'Round my way, cats get murder planned
Ain't no rules, play dirty, man
Put somethin' through your jersey, man
If your partner want some, we can do it again
Okay, H-U-S-T-L-E
G-G-G-A-N-G, yeah, that way
Just pull up, pull up, hop out, hop out
All about the dollar, better go and ask Gaga

Too $hort’s is pretty straightforward … but, whereas T.I.‘s verse was more conventionally drug-adjacent … Too $horts “drug” is women

Spoiler

[Verse 3: Too $hort]
Everybody want that money, what you want?
High as h–l, tryna have some f—kin' fun
I don't need 'em, but the diamonds make it shine (Shine)
Tried to kick it, just can't find the time
It's the middle of the week, this ain't even the weekend
Red carpet events, every time you see p—ps
It's good p—y in the passenger seat
My lil' homies hang with me, I be passin' 'em … (B—h)

Twista‘s kingpin take on the “lifestyle” drug absolutely dialed in to the limelight haze

Spoiler

[Verse 4: Twista]
Come and show me the gateway into your love
I feel like the money can never do it like the club
And I feel like a diamond can never do it like a drug
And I want it so come on and take it with me so that I can hit it
I can admit it, I'm influenced by desire when I approach her
I try to provoke her by givin' money and jewelry and accessories
Instead of the recipe of a legacy of takin' her to another place when I get it
Hold up
Twista be goin' in warp speed, breakin' atoms
Blowin' O.G. has got me creating antimatter
Let her pop it and smoke on it with me, now I got her
Because she be ready to party and then move to the club (Yes)
Because you know the way I think is an anomaly
And I'ma be strange as Lady Gaga
Probably a dollar be the business
But I'd rather be in an outer dimension when I be talkin' about jewels and drugs

… but, just a one-off take on the second glance

Haven’t thought much about its meaning, but I think it’s a cool/fun song.

I can bop to it.

I don’t know why the fanbase constantly drags it.
