Yes and no, tbh. I feel like she’s cycled through a couple musical identities that felt distinct to her at the time (the flavor of pop R&B meets electronic dance pop of My Everything and Dangerous Woman) and then again with the trap adjacent mumble rap of TYN and Positions, but I just feel like she kind of stopped giving af after those eras and hasn’t tried much else musically. WCBF is such an obvious Robyn dupe that it kind of surprises me she doesn’t get more **** for it and the rest of the ES album doesn’t really do anything for me. I think this single, tho, is the most boring iteration of her sound and the one that’s the least distinctive to her as an artist.

I honestly just wish she’d lean into the fact that she can really fckn sing and deliver big pop vocals

Some of her fans on social media have started blaming her being in Wicked for this change. Cos her singing style and how she carry her persona changed ever since that, especially since she uses method acting, and she might not have over that persona yet lmao

Sadly there's a lot of misogny around the whole "female stars delivering powerful vocals" which sucks tbh. I've always hated that mindset.

However she's clearly one of the few, along with Beyonce and Adele who is pigeon-holed and can easily generate success with "loud, over top" vocal tracks.
