Oriane 22,710
"It's been two years since I let you go I couldn't listen to a joke or a Rock and Roll Muscle cars drove a truck right through my heart On my birthday you sang me "Heart of Gold" With a guitar humming and no clothes" Although I don't relate to these specific details, there's something very true about not being able to laugh, listen to the music that the person likes, or see anything they like because it's painful. The second part I can relate to because of an experience I had. "I know I ****ed up again 'cause I lost my only friend" There were times when I lost very close friends and I felt like I was responsible, so this line hits hard. A lot of Gypsy: "Sometimes a story has no end Sometimes I think that we could just be friends "'Cause I'm a wandering man," he said to me "And what about our future plans? Does this thing we have even makes sense When I got the whole world in front of me?" I don't wanna be alone forever, but I love gypsy life "So I just packed my baggage and Said goodbye to family and friends" And took a road to nowhere on my own" "I don't speak German, but I try" Very relatable, as somone who lives far from home. Also relates to someone I had a long-distance friendship/relationship with, and we knew it wouldn't work in the long term. Also a lot of Chromatica, when I was depressed: "Where's my body? I'm stuck in my mind" "At least I show up, you showed me nothing at all" "Think it's a wound I still entertain" "Am I still alive? Where am I? I cry Who was it that pulled the trigger? Was it you or I?" All of these I could totally relate to, sometimes blaming myself for the pain I was going through. "River in my eyes, I've got a poem in my throat I hear the music and it takes me by surprise" This one is so real when you're a songwriter. From pain and tears comes beautiful music and lyrics, and sometimes, in your darkest moments, you get a hit of creativity that pushes you to keep going. I think there’s definitely so much room in art to take the artist’s original meaning and intent but also take the subtext into our own interpretation to resonate on a deeper, spiritual level. The degree of separation between “Hey Girl” being about supporting female friendships/empowerment and sapphic empowerment is like a centimeter, and that is the power of her work and art! Take your time; I’d love to see which lyrics resonate with you most, and especially from a sapphic perspective! I think so many of her songs are intentionally (and unintentionally) about sapphic attraction and even her songs about tapping into a “feminine divine” as it were are obviously so sapphic coded that it’s impossible to not have that connection to her work. Now you made me tear up! "Just another way to prove I love you / And it's hard today / I'll lay back in my chair and find a way / And when you say that thing that you say / That makes me mad / I'll turn away, I'll turn away, I'll turn away / And think of different ways to keep my spirits up / And choreograph hours with playful, joyous thoughts / We both know I could learn a thing or two / About relaxing, hey, I love you / And after all, it's just another day / Oh, I could use some two or three / Or other kind of ways to be / But today I won't be so hard on me / I'll walk alone down a different street / And smile at all the new strange I meet / And pick up unique style, I'll kick around today / And create simple thoughts, I'll laugh in humble ways / We both know I could learn a thing or two / About behaving, but I love you / And after all, it's just another day" I really get emotional by reading alone, this feels like concrete poetry to free my mind, so rhythmic and captivating all the way through. And I know Gaga dedicated it to Mark but after re-reading it i realize just how much this is like a love letter from Stefani to Lady Gaga, which makes even more sense with my own way of echoing this song to myself, like a motto or a prayer (that i don't end up kword myself). Today I won't be so hard on me, which really is, today I will face my fears (however I can), and I won't hurt myself (too much), and I will stay around for enough time to see another day. Echoing it again and again don't magically make the bad feelings go away, but just by focusing on Gaga's voice, and thinking about the place of pain from where this song came, how "all this blood was never beautiful in the beginning, it was just red", and how she survived, it distracts me so I move on because, after all, it's just another day. After many years of being alive in spite of me, like I know Gaga herself has felt too, it is continuously music that bring us back to life, no matter what happens and how hard it gets, all of these connections make us feel stronger and less lonely, and after all it's just another day. So yeah I really love this song and could go on and on for pages I don't believe in the glorification of murder, I do believe in the empowerment of women

Wow, I absolutely love your connection to this song! That's what I love about pop music: the ability to transmute something specific from the performer/writer to a universal appeal that everyone can connect to in some way. I think that "meeting of the minds" in the song: Stefani to Gaga, us to ourselves, (and to a greater extent: conscious to subconscious) is incredibly affirming. I love that we can recognize something in art that connects us to each other and each other to the art or artist. Lowkey very ARTPOP...

And on that note, BTW (both song and album) will always mean the world to me because "No matter gay, straight, or bi / Lesbian, transgender life / I'm on the right track baby / I was born to survive / No matter black, white or beige" as a lightskin dyke is just sooooo real despite life's disabilities lefting me outcast bullied and teased I don't believe in the glorification of murder, I do believe in the empowerment of women
