The Mistress was always there

I love how Mayhem has been a whole era of her finally fine tuning her mission statement.

She’s went back to almost every concept she did in previous albums and fine tuned them, now I understand why she said Mayhem was about being constructed from old pieces of yourself.

100%. I also love that that color contrast is introduced in Paparazzi at the VMAs (performance look vs. acceptance look) through BR and all the way to Abra and how TAOPC manages to make its use of that color contrast feel connected to all of those moments. Like the fact that the first time we see the lace Lady in Red in TAOPC is after the Mistress “kills” EtherealGa and sends her into the gothic dream (which is, in part, of being a tortured celebrity/blonde starlet) and the first time we saw the lace Lady in Red irl was after a Gaga in white is killed onstage as a consequence of being a tortured blonde starlet…dramaturgically consistent QUEEN

Mayhem overall feels so refined (that’s probably came with years of experience and age) that id argue that The Fame - Mayhem is the actual first “phase” of her career. She sort of even said it herself when she received that award Doechii presented her “‘i’m just getting started”.

It feels like the ending of a book, so I’m excited to see where she goes next because for the first time ever we have no idea where she’s gonna go. I’m gonna start calling this era The Art of Personal Chaos (2008-2026)

Her first album was The Fame/The Fame Monster. She’s always toyed with the idea of Fame being a prison, and she eventually found herself behind those bars. Her Grammys performance with Elton, Paparazzi, The Queen, Gypsy, DWUW, Joanne, Chromatica, and much much more were all about this very concept in one way or another. It’s just a shame that other than Perfect Celebrity, none of Mayhem really delves into this career long narrative while the tour and MVs do. While I do find the “Mistress was here, here, and here”  because of a look thing slightly cringe (I’m an a**hole), Gaga has always always always loved playing with the idea of Fame/Celebrity which is who The Mistress is.

This is cute and all, but I reach. I don’t think Gaga planned her career THAT far ahead.

Obviously the extent to which she planned any of it is arguable, but she said during the MAYHEM era that the Abracadabra MV was based around a concept she originally had for the BR vid, so there’s a good chance she had a version of the Mistress character in her mind since at least 2009.

Ngl I honestly prefer that the album is able to stand on its own outside of that meta narrative while still being able to use its material to tell that story in the tour.

Also, even if you don’t think it was planned, you’d still have to be willing to admit that TAOPC and the MAYHEM era are excellent retconning lol

The overseer queen has been a staple character throughout her career for sure. Not just a figure in read, I think she also has to be a looming presence to qualify :

This is also her :
