If anything, I think centrists are probably more unpopular than they’ve ever been because Trump 2.0 has shown how thoroughly morally and ideologically bankrupt they are and how disinterested they are in actually governing (not to mention the positions most centrists hold are widely unpopular). I know not everything’s about Israel, but I think supporting Israel (and AIPAC candidates) was basically the centrist position: both parties did it, people either didn’t care or actively supported it. Now, AIPAC money is radioactive in both parties and the “centrists” (center-left and center-right) are scrambling to adjust their messaging without losing donor money while they hemorrhage support. I think this dynamic also extends well beyond Israel as well (Gen AI + data centers, Epstein, economic populism). I think, if anything, the country is probably more primed than ever for a genuine economic populist who’s socially progressive because the material conditions have gotten so bad that the bottom is falling out of a lot of the culture war machine because people don’t have the bandwidth to give a **** about stuff like that, so they’d probably be more open to voting for, let’s say, a candidate that supports LGBTQ+ issues if they spend the bulk of their campaign fighting for affordability (basically the Bernie Sanders model). obviously i'm not american and can only speak from an outside perspective, but the UK political situation is usually affected by the views of american politicians and we're very much rejecting leftist policies nowadays in the UK. Our arguably only left party now is the Green party but the media seems to have a hit out on them currently. Our anti-trans laws are arguably now worse than the US, now it's been made illegal for trans people to go into the bathroom they feel comfortable in entirely. And unlike the US where it differs by state this now affects all four nations in the UK. There was a far right anti-immigrant march (let's be honest it's anti-anyone-not-white) last week where racists flooded London which is the first time a protest of that magnitude has happened in London for a very long time. The BBC and Broadcasters are actively pushing pro-Isreal propaganda and censoring pro-Palestinian opinion. It's just getting worse by the day. However, despite all that ALL the political party leaders are under scrutiny. Kier Stamer (our current PM) is under scrutiny about his treatment of pensions, older people in general and immigration (despite our immigration being reported at a -- rather bad actually, all time low). Nigel Farage and his Reform party are under scrutiny because they want to make massive cuts and enforce "Americanisation" on us like singing our National Anthem before school days start and having England flags (note: England not British) hanging in every classroom. Zack Polanski (who I'm voting for) is under scrutiny for his (misinterpreted) drugs policy, in that he no longer wants drugs to be entirely illegal because "people will do them anyway, we'd rather have them regulated". He's also under scrutiny for a lot more things like his views on Nuclear power, being pro-LGBTQ+ (he's the only out-gay person running) and for being a Jewish man who's against Isreal. Sorry this was long and a rant lowkey akdhdkf my point is this; If the UK a somewhat more liberal country than the US clearly is gonna need a centrist then the US absolutely is too sadly. Because our relationship is important and currently we're closing in on a general election and our options so far are; A man who won't stand upto trump but also won't break to his desire for war - Stamer A woman who is very anti-american and will not give trump the time of day - Badenoch A man who is for the americanisation of the UK and loves trump dearly - Farage And a man who hates Trump specifically, but is willing to work with world leaders despite him being hard left - Polanski I think if AOC becomes President of the US, then the UK's next leader is absolutely going to be Polanski Edited May 25 by gagzus
JoeCool 1,080
I think she is too left of center for mainstream Americans. I can't see her beating a "more sane GOP" candidate. That would include even Vance or Rubio. That being said Trump's popularity is at record lows. Even folks that voted for him have soured on him when surprise surprise the economy is still in the tanks. A lot can change for sure in 2.5 years Edited May 25 by JoeCool

I just don’t really think the climates are even remotely similar between the UK and the US atp. I could be wrong but, to me, the UK atm feels to me like the US between 2020-2024: the leader of the country is a feckless moderate who gets painted by the far right as a leftist radical and as a right winger by the leftists, people are angry about the economy + inflation, xenophobia, racism, and bigotry are rising out of disinfo campaigns capitalizing on economic dissatisfaction and pre-COVID economic/social nostalgia etc. That climate, to me, feels like a pressure cooker or a powder keg about to explode. Meanwhile, the US is like a powder keg that has actively exploded: because a percentage of Americans within the margin of error threw a temper tantrum about the economy (and to some extent either endorsed or tolerated his culture war nonsense) and because the Dems failed to offer a compelling alternative, they’ve now elected a man who has thrown the US economy into unprecedented chaos multiple times, a man who has revealed deep institutional rot through his implication with Epstein + KGB + Mossad, and a man who was dragged into a pointless foreign war driving up the cost of living at the behest of Israel while simultaneously driving a stake through the heart of US global hegemony. Under those circumstances, I genuinely have hard time imagining that anyone would be interested in business as usual and centrist Dems, in spite of broad opposition to the GOP, are also historically unpopular and many of whom could be unseated by progressive challengers. I just really don’t see this as a moment when anyone stands to gain anything from being tepid because the country is, imo, pretty obviously looking for seismic change. Laxy 408
I think she should run but I am not certain she should run this time given how divided and racist America is at the moment. When she does become president she will be EXCELLENT.

He just got more or less strong armed into it. If somehow he can separate himself from Trump over the next few years kind of thing. Especially when you look at him coming out and supporting Trump’s efforts in Iran (to and including Trump’s threats to end Iranian civilization with a nuke). I just think he’s been so sycophantic that there’s no way for him to separate himself from Trump atp because he’s gleefully gone along with everything Trump has done and reads as an empty suit to a lot of people. I honestly would be more concerned about someone like Tucker Carlson taking the right wing, anti-establishment populist angle and winning over independent voters than I would be about Vance or Rubio Edited May 25 by Ladle Ghoulash We have forgotten our public MANNERS
Nemo 4,414
I'd rather see her go for governor or senator first, to build her creds. But I'd vote for her.
MountainMonster 2,826
Honestly, I’d vote for a potato if it had a (D) next to it on the ballot. And honestly, why not have a populist left movement. Obviously populism has worked for the right.

Assuming of course there are actually elections then. It may help voter turn out! Then again republicans who "hate socialism" may also feel urgency to come out. He's awful and believes in nothing. If the Democrats feel the need to nominate a straight, white male, it should be Jon Ossoff or Chris Van Hollen.
