I know outside of celebrities, honorary doctorates get awarded to people as a purely symbolic thing and usually its related to getting that individual to give a commencement speech. It doesn't have any actual academic value or give you the right to have the Dr. title.

I guess its cool when a famous person gets one but it isn't as impressive as actually studying for one

True but these honorary doctorate degrees aren't just awarded to anyone all the time, some people have actually done meaningful work in that field and deserve some recognition. I just think it needs to be called something else so the celebs don't get the privileges of using that title which some of them absolutely do and system allows.

I take no offense as a Christian (by practice but I don’t participate in the organized religion part bc of obvious reasons) The things a lot of these ppl do in the name of Jesus are embarrassing but I have a good giggle reading things like this believing one day that justice will be served and they will have to answer for the their idiotic actions and crimes.

Oh absolutely... I can't remember correctly but the legal criteria to receive an honorary doctorate involves a  certain amount of hours dedicated to the field, lasting contributions to field/society, philantropy, etc.

A lot of these celebrities technically hit the hour requirement but everything is still left up to discretion of the university and philanthropy probably helps a lot. I don't think they need to be handing them out to everyone, or people just need to understand its symbolic and has no real meaning or credential to it. It is a little embarrassing seeing someone think they just got the same degree as an actual doctorate.

Sometimes I wish god was real 'cause I know Jesus would be standing at the gates ready to drop kick these freaks in the chest before casting them down to eternal damnation
