Ok so here’s a breakdown because people don’t really seem to understand. Charting high =/= a hit, a hit is a song everyone still remembers years later.

Boomclap, Summertime Sadness, Oh So Quiet, Dancing on My Own etc we all remember the songs even if we don’t listen to the albums or any other song from them.

Ive never in my life listened to a Robyn album but I know Dancing on My Own.
Same even applies to Taylor Swift. I don’t listen to her but I know at least 5 songs by her.

A hit is about longevity, people who don’t listen to Gaga know Bad Romance or Born This Way or Shallow. They don’t know Dope which charted high, would we say Dope is a hit just because it charted well for a week? Absolutely not and nobody in this fandom claims that lol

I truly and personally have never heard a single Ava Max song and couldn’t tell you what she sounds like, my frame of reference from her is her being mentioned on here and I know is she looks like Gaga and people know her as a sample heavy person. That’s as far as my scope goes.

Even artists I don’t like or listen to I know at least one song from them, that’s what a hit song is not a “it charted in the top 10 for a week”.

That’s why controversially Taylor Swift hasn’t actually had many hit songs imo in the last 10 years or so because the last big song she had that was inescapable before Fate of Ophelia was Shake it Off. Maybe the next closest thing was Cruel Summer.

But yeah being gay and knowing a song =/= a hit I’m afraid.

I always thought "a Khia" as someone whose career never really took off despite having a small following and actively trying to get famous. :oprah:

Just another upsetting cog in the wheel here... are you all aware Khia is pronounced like fly and not tea?

The original definition was a popstar who was once big and fell off so bad they can no longer get back to it. But now anybody who doesn’t manage to have a hit is considered a Khia. Katy Perry for example is the ultimate Khia.

For example, Bebe Rexha IS a khia because she used to have hit songs but now doesn’t. Charli used to have hits and now doesn’t (although that’s up for debate given how culturally big brat was).

Where as people like Slayyyter, Ava Max etc have never had hit single. Bjork had one and so did Robyn so I guess they’re Khia’s, same for Lana.

See I always thought Khias were the girls who were always failing to get a hit/long term momentum despite having cult fan bases.
E.g. Slayyyter, Caroline Polachek etc

You'd think so, I think maybe that's what it's evolved into but most of the people in it (I love how we actualise a figurative place btw lol) 100% started off as a way to say formerly successful. That's why it's called the Khia Asylum because Khia was fairly popular and famous when My Neck, My Back came out in 2002 and they faded into obscurity. Even if you google it, the google AI module tells you it's "fading or faded" popstars who lost relevance after an initial hit.

Katy Perry is probably the biggest example because she went from a hitmaking machine that was basically like what Taylor Swift is now to the depths of hell her career has gone.

I always assumed it was a reference to the Khia Forum lol
That LA arena that's smaller than most US arenas

nah it's in reference to Queen Khia the rapper. I'm sure the stan who coined the term said years ago that's who it was about.
