GAGA IS GROOVY 804
RIP MAYHEM. A farewell to one of the greatest Gaga eras ever, and what a farewell it was!! Requiem is pure genius. I felt like I was drifting down a lazy river of electronica, being hypnotised by constant waves of synth, as Gaga steered the ship with her mesmerising performance. The show has an almost dreamlike quality too, with all the low hums and pulsating synths blending with the shadowy visuals and smoky lasers. A gothic dream! The core of MAYHEM remains intact throughout the show, but its echoes and ghosts are interpolated in really interesting ways. Killah and Die with a Smile are the most spectacular performances so I can absolutely see why they've been uploaded onto YouTube. But, love, love, love the entire show! Requiem adds yet another layer to this era that cements it as one of Gaga's best. Thank you Gaga, I’ve paid my toll to the angels for the final time, and now there’s a river in my eyes. Spoiler (However, Requiem being THIS good has only exacerbated my Bitter Betty-ness and I fear I will always mourn the fact that this era ended with only two true MAYHEM singles/music videos....) metalguru 1,565
And oh those layers! organic harmonies, heavy synths, piano, guitars straight out of The Cure, echoes of the '80s and some future decade that hasn't arrived yet all of it, unmistakably hers. From Harlequin to this, she's shown an artistic integrity that leaves me speechless... and so proud of her. I think the full fruit of this newly found muse is still to come. 4 4

In spite of the conversation about Gaga and religion often centering around her provocative use of religious iconography, I think her most interesting contribution to the discussion is actually decentering the ecstasy and liturgy of religious experience from the nexus of tradition/established faith practices (“my religion is you”). Taking religion, at first, as obsession and devotion during TFM, then gradually building it into a personal practice, belief system, shared ceremony, but also, probably most radically in the idea that religion is the machination of personal meaning using the world (both figurative and abstract) as raw material.
