Well part of that is because—like Africa—it’s been subjected to decades of wars and proxy wars by bigger powers and corporations wanting to strip mine their wealth.

I've given up trying at this point, it must be nice to just throw a "the middle east is fucked up" and then go about your day

What do you think Ziggy is saying here that’s insensitive? Honest question.

Yeah, I was gonna comment something about the period of Soviet occupation, Israel stealing Russian weapons and selling them to the CIA, the CIA turning around and giving those same weapons to rebel groups to basically bleed Russia ('cause weeee it was the cold war), that leading to the Afghan civil war, and then the rise of the Taliban as a result of all of that.

A lot of these countries get jerked around and the worst people get empowered, either directly or just out of the chaos, and then the West points and says "See? They're monsters!" as if our countries didn't create them.

In the 60s and 70s women were actively part of society, even holding some political offices 'cause their new constitution at the time legalized it.

I mean, that was largely an urban thing and rural areas were backwards, deeply religious, and stupid (just like the good ol' US-of-A) but still.

If Afghanistan didn't become this battleground for global superpowers we likely would have seen the institutional change necessary for women to at least be considered human today :saladga:

"What's wrong with the Middle East?"

Bitch, it's us and it's always been us :madge:

Thank youuuuu. Bc also what happens in times of war and strife? Usually tradition and conservatism are emergent. It’s a pattern

How did I say that? Lol I said the exact opposite lmfao a comment section filled with people saying they’re a backwards country and I pointed out that they are not entirely to blame given how colonial powers have exploited them for decades. No, it is not nice to reckon with the idea that my livelihood makes others lives materially suffer. But I’m not going to lie on that truth either if others are trying to avoid it?

There's no one else to blame but the governments and individuals that support and enact these "laws". When the countries like the US enact regressive laws,  we call out their leaders and supporters of said laws and same applies here.

I don’t think we really need to over analyse this.

Love that the west AND RUSSIA can just stand back and act like they played no part in destabilizing Afghanistan for 200 years.

This will be the future of Iran too if the US and Israel are allowed to balkanize it like they want to. The more violence (including sanctions) is inflicted on a country or region, the more radicalized the population will become. Desperation incentivizes it. It’s the backbone of religion. :yennefer:

I mean, the same can be said about the US. We aren’t immune to that ****. You can argue that the the political and elite class has been sanctioning the middle class since the 80s, which has resulted in more extremist ideologies. The way some men openly and popularly talk about women on social media is scary.

I was literally just laughing from a meme a friend sent, to opening GagaDaily and this being the top headline immediately wiping that smile off my face. This is sad and evil.

If Anne Hathawill, Anne Hathaway.

The government in Afghanistan isn’t a democracy. They’re ruled by the Taliban, who operate as a theocratic totalitarian government who impose their will through violence and the citizens essentially do not have rights.

I must give a remark, that this is pretty similar to how the jewish orthodox community lives, just the woman must work and provide, while the man prayers a study the bible and such.

I think, in principle, almost every religious fundamentalist group (Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike) would probably want to treat women this way, but one thing that makes it worse here is the fact that it’s sanctioned and dictated by the state. Sure, Jewish orthodox communities in the US, for example, can get away with a certain level of repression of women, but because they ultimately operate inside of a legal system that recognizes women as having equal rights (as imperfect as that system may be), those women would be protected if they stepped out of their communities and reported to law enforcement and their abuser would be held accountable. Here, however, the Taliban has made it all but impossible for women to be protected against abuse and, instead, seems to be encouraging that abuse.
