Spirit Airlines shutting down

I saw this tweet and it looked fake lmao but then I googled and it's true, donezo

Spirit Airlines is shutting down as a business after failing to secure a $500m (£368m) bailout from the Trump administration.

The budget airline was in talks with the US government about a rescue deal which would have saved it from collapse.

But discussions collapsed and the carrier said in an announcement on its website on Saturday that with "great disappointment" the airline had "started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately".

Spirit was emerging from its second bankruptcy filing in recent years before the US-Israel war in Iran, but the resulting surge in jet fuel costs pushed it over the brink.

All upcoming flights with Spirit have been cancelled, while those with tickets are not expected to be refunded as part of the winding down process.

Long live United ✈️ (I’m bias) Come see us in the Devils Wears Prada haha.

But it does suck to have less competition and more importantly I am sorry to those thousands that lost their jobs. :(

oh....would be interested in the reason for this. i wonder if that happend cuz of those kerosene prices.

edit: just red that there was no support from investors and goverment. apparently they were in talks to get money for 90% shares but it did not work out. (dunno if its true)

This is so sad. Spirit was one of the few affordable options and not to mention all the employees that are now laid off.
when does American become great again?

This is BAD.

Less competition and other airlines are already raising prices. Spirit was the one keeping them in check.

Unfortunately this was coming since the JetBlue acquisition was blocked by a judge in 2022 and now a bailout not approved. The company was a financial disaster.

Idk enough about Spirit.

But I do find it interesting that a budget airline has struggled so much in the US vs other markets where they've generally done very well or even become massively prominent.

Suppose, other places are more inclined to international travel for holidays where as the US has more domestic options

From my understanding, the trouble started during the pandemic. They couldn’t recover and went through two bankruptcies in the past years.

Spirit was affordable and the other bigger airlines started to offer budget options as well to compete. All of this led to no profits and honestly it was just a matter of time.
