The collapse of the soviet union and with it, the horrible free market reforms to Russia's economy in the 90's (both spearheaded by America and it's allies) is what created the conditions for Putin to rise to power and prominence. Hate Putin all you want, and I certainly do, but it's the failure of the west that he even has the power he does. Russia was always aggresive to its neighbours. This was long before US was even remotely as influential as today. The country of Russia is an imperialistic expansionist country/regime.
