Not that I hate ARTPOP or its lyrics, but lately I’ve realized I have to be in the mood to listen to it because of some of the clunkers and triteness of the record. That’s basically how I feel about ARTPOP, too. I just kind of feel like the immaturity is wrapped in a psuedo-profundity and self-importance that makes it a little less accessible and a little less effective (to varying degrees. I think Venus threads the needle, GUY doesn’t, for example). MAYHEM’s immaturity leans full send into its campiness while simultaneously fully investing in the emotional stakes, whereas ARTPOP’s feels like it’s fighting against its own desire to be taken seriously and seen as “deep,” which I think undercuts reading it as self-aware/purposeful camp. Basically, both are camp, ARTPOP’s is likely more camp by the truest reading of Sontag’s Notes (becomes camp over time, often requires a lack of awareness of it’s own campiness), but I think MAYHEM’s camp feels more masterful because she reads like she’s in on the joke while simultaneously being brave enough to commit to being completely absurd. Best of both worlds, tbh. Edited April 25 by Ladle Ghoulash We have forgotten our public MANNERS 2 1
Sneaky Oliver 22,831
It’s between TFM (Bad Romance, Speechless and SHICD being the highlights here, also the iconic DITD bridge) and BTW (TEOG and You and I are definitely career highlights, looove MTN and The Queen as well)
ActualPatient 2,400
Lyrically: I think The Fame Monster was the most poetic. Really hard to outdo the impeccable lyricism of Bad Romance, Dance in the Dark, So Happy I could Die etc. Can we talk about how purposefully ironic Speechless is being the record where she says a whole lot? I think it's genius. But also, I would harp about Chromatica having her most vulnerable lyrics but armored with electronic pop. Not a lot of people here remember it fondly but I feel it can be her most honest and most cathartic. ARTPOP lyrics has a lot of experimentation, camp, chaos... it has a special place Edited April 25 by ActualPatient If symptom persists, consult your doctor.

ThisGuyTony 33,934
I wanna say Chromatica because of songs like Alice, Replay, 911, ROM, Fun Tonight but on the flip side we know she wasn’t at her best. Born This Way does encapsulate everything about who she is and all the songs have a story to them.

steven 6,473
I'm sorry and I'm ready to get downvote but Chromatica is very deep lyrics wise, and perhaps her most underrated album among this fanbase. Edited April 25 by steven 1 1

Ashley 10,155
It’s hard to choose because all her albums have examples of good lyricism. I think TFM as a whole has an edge over the others.

MajorMinus 403
100% Born This Way. So many topics, intriguing literary devices, and a distinct boldness. Don’t think Mayhem’s were as bad as a lot of posters say. Now Chromatica…very generic, boring lyrics that could’ve been written by anyone. Even though I enjoy the album…oof. Horny Chicken 10,610
I voted for Chromatica then changed to BTW. I am going to change it back because I think that album deserves more votes.

Omegahedron 306
I actually went with The Fame. For lyrics, I don't think it gets its flowers enough from us guys for how inventive it's lyrics are. And thematically set a template for many things to come (the stuttering, the risque double entendres (disco sticks, bluffin' with my muffin, the critique of fame itself).
