SleepingSun 971
Bor This Way without a shadow of a (man) doubt. Though I do think Mayhem also has some excellent lyrics. Yes, the songs aren't thematically as deep as some of her previous work, nonetheless the songwriting is clever, cheeky and smart. One second I'm a troll, then suddenly the troll is me. 1
AVeryGagaHolyDick 30,935
Not 4 votes for Chromatica that’s wayyyy too many lmao, that album’s lyrics are barely okay for the most part Other than that one, I think they all are great in their own way. But I’d say the best written is Born This Way, followed by The Fame Monster, then Joanne, then MAYHEM, then The Fame, then ARTPOP

I’d argue the lyrics often aim for world building/setting the scene more than they aim for straight up poeticism and that’s where I think the album shines all around. Also the lyrics to Killah alone are some of the cheekiest and cleverest she’s done. We have forgotten our public MANNERS

The subtlety probably makes it harder for people to appreciate Mayhems full lyrical potential, especially compared to the more 'in your face poetry' of many BTW songs. And agreed on Killah, that song is peak cheekiness, which makes me love it even more. One second I'm a troll, then suddenly the troll is me. 2
Lizzie 95
very torn between BTW and TFM you're on your own kid, yeah you can face this!
PornoDanceFight 1,824
Born This Way TFM Mayhem In that order. BTW for the high concept maximalism, TFM for slick Euro-pop perfection, and Mayhem as a mix of both and for its intentional lyrical immaturity (read: campiness) that will be timeless in comparison to the lyrical immaturity to ARTPOP.

No, it’s definitely intentional in ARTPOP, but I think the lyrical immaturity works better in Mayhem (GoE, Killah, ZB, HBDUWM) than some of ARTPOP’s tracks (the first six tracks and Fashion!). Not that I hate ARTPOP or its lyrics, but lately I’ve realized I have to be in the mood to listen to it because of some of the clunkers and triteness of the record.
phantasmas 12,075
I think Joanne did it best by delivering it's messaging plainly and clearly, no super high concepts I wouldn't call it low brow but more so universal? or palatable i guess? side note: one of my fave authors used to be a copywriter and would write the captions for images in textbooks; this taught him to use little words to convey big descriptions & ideas and i think that is what Joanne successfully has done
