Kayi 3,028
I learned about Madonna because my mom introduced her to me with the "Like a Prayer" song when she was making me and my lil bros, discover songs from the 80s. I was like 10 or 11 yo if I'm not wrong ?? I might have heard other songs of her without knowing it was hers at that time. Then I discovered by my own when I was 14 or 15yo her hits such as "Papa Don't Preach", "True Blue", "Express yourself", "Hung Up", "Jump", etc... by digging pop culture elite ball knowledge. I truly appreciated her but didn't digged as much her discography as other artists that I appreciated a lot. It was at the same time I became super fan of Gaga and had a big deceptions when some friends of mine and a bish that wasn't my friend but just a mean bish, a bullies bootlickers () decided to go watch HOG without me... Can you imagine going to watch a movie with your friend's fav popstar, and not inviting her ??? I mean, was there another girl in highschool that cared enough about Gaga to even listen to her niche unreleased bangers ? And you girls were singing Bad Romance when I told you that Ga was my teen idol... And yeah I'm a Gen Z In my peace era.

LOVEDRUG 11,152
There's a huge difference between knowing somebody and being able to recognise them. Every single person I know (I'm twenty-one) knows who Madonna is, and at the very least would be able to recognise five of her songs if they were played to them (Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Vogue, Frozen and Hung Up come to mind). We're pop fans, so obviously we immediately recognise the vast majority of iconic popstars. Most ordinary people, unless it's a popstar who's particularly zeitgeist-y at that moment, couldn't, especially without their respective most iconic visual cues. She had no direct impact or hits in my childhood. Take in how we’re technically 2 generations of pop stars post-Gaga. We went from Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa to Sabrina, Olivia, etc. Keep in mind in between that there was a “death” of pop era because EDM, hip-hop & r&b was the new “pop” (Drake, The Chainsmokers, Avicii, The Weekend, etc). Lastly, music is much more personalized because of streaming. Hence, Gen z don’t gaf about radio which means the music industry has less power to make a huge star. Now we have 100000 artists that are huge in their niche but won’t be necessarily be household names. So they’re quite reasonable to not know who Madonna is considering the general information overload these days. I also don’t think majority of Sabrina fans (she’s Taylor swift aligned) would be cultured enough to care imo lmao… Do people of your age know who Lady Gaga is? Literally could not have picked her out of a lineup until I was maybe like 12? If it wasn’t for her releasing that Justin Timberlake song in like 2008 or whatever it was I wouldn’t have really been aware of her at all until much later tbh I became aware of her in 2005 with Hung Up (also age 12) Edited April 19 by Economy

Frey 73
10 hours ago, River said: Honestly it’s dumb as a millennial I knew many artists from the 60-80s since forever Idk.. As someone born around the Millennial/Gen Z transition I’m honestly not surprised about this.. Well to start my household growing up was never big on music, vague memories of our kitchen radio, otherwise remember being obsessed w/ 3 Hillary duff albums would play em over and over on a portable cd player.. (think there was her debut album, Lizzie migure movie soundtrack , and Cinderella story soundtrack?) but anyways other than that, my first job back in middle school had a radio that we’d jam to.. Anyways I think towards end of middle school, around time of becoming little monster did I finally start actively looking to explore music.. Back on track my point being, I definitely had no idea who Madonna was prior to Highschool, I honestly only really learned who she was when the BTW vs express yourself all went down.. I remember searching up her music videos back then(was really into music vids at time bc of Gaga) and only had heard a few of her songs before then where I was like ooo so that was a Madonna song… I think prior to my generation, people were growing up with tv/radio which gave the broad scope of what was popular (not like that’s not the case now, but I think the difference between then & now is obv the rise of internet, and with that I feel like it has almost evolved into some sort of like individualized hub sort of thing? Specially with the younger end of Gen Z but with the generation fully growing up with internet I feel like it’s almost impossible for them to organically stumble upon an artist from say pre 2000’s unless brought in thru friends, family, or some sort of public setting.. Without that external introduction I think there is a very small chance of them knowing older celebrities.. The ‘hubs’ they’re connected to online (be it thru gaming, YouTube, social media, whatever route the average person currently coming to age takes to joining the online world) will be what is introducing music to them, and from there whatever streaming services, and what those are pushing.. Just isn’t like turning on radio and scanning thru the local channels, or flipping thru channels on tv.. Compared to that, they have so much at their fingertips that without being introduced prior, their algorithms have so much more to push at them.. So yea bc of all of this Mary Jane Holland rambling I just did, that I don’t feel like proof reading, that the conclusion becomes it being natural the younger generations don’t know the older if they haven’t been introduced to irl Frey as in free b*tch baby
