For some, if the song isn't 120bpm+ it's not "good" music. Eh, I just don’t find it all that interesting. It’s cute, she’s talented, but there’s nothing “wow” about her, imo. And tbf, she’s pretty decidedly pop. I’m inclined to agree with you in general about how LMs and online pop stans react to music, tho. And outside of Man I Need which is the most commercial from her new album, she definitely focuses on that soul/jazz/rnb sound. And Man I Need is more motown than it is "pop" imo. I wouldn't say she's got a wow factor, but she's definitely filling a gap in the market that's been empty of new names for awhile. I think of “pop” as less of a genre in and of itself and more of a format/sensibility (song structure, hookiness, deliberate accessibility) so I’d still say most of what I’ve heard from her does fall under the umbrella of “pop.” We have forgotten our public MANNERS

I don’t really see how it erases genre to describe something as “pop R&B” or “soul pop,” tbh. I mean, hell, a lot of the OG motown groups like The Temptations were 100% making pop music in format, execution, and distribution, but that doesn’t mean it’s not also motown. Those things are not mutually exclusive and the only reason I made the distinction is because there are people who make soul/R&B that is decidedly not aiming for a pop sound, so that’s why I think it’s worth mentioning that I think Dean is decidedly in the pop lane of her sound. Because pop has in my opinion taken on a life of its own as a specific genre since the 80s. It's no longer just "popular music" as it was originally. American record labels have sanitised it, industrialised it and whitened it. Like pop is Tate McRae/Addison Meh/Taylor Swift in a cultural sense now - its incredibly white. That’s something that I view as being in its own lane to an extent (pop for pop’s sake), but even at that, many of those artists still are dabbling in broader genres/subgenres, so it’s not as if even that more supposedly monolithic sound doesn’t still come with other qualifiers and descriptors. Even if you look at the mainlining of “pop as genre” in the 80s-90s, a lot of that is just things like dance-pop, synth pop, arena pop, pop rock, pop R&B, Americana pop etc. 11 minutes ago, Ladle Ghoulash said: I don’t really see how it erases genre to describe something as “pop R&B” or “soul pop,” tbh. Has nothing to do with her making music under 120bpm rather than it just feels like she is being forced down everyone’s throats atm, I have been listening to snippets of the radio for the last 2 weeks for 10-20 mins at a time, different times of the day and she’s being played EVERY time. To me that is making her way too oversaturated and average. Welcome to GagaDaily, it looks like things just got messgendary.

I fully get where you're coming from tbf. And like everything Olivia has as a reference point (the Supremes/Paul Simon etc) were all what "pop" was at its time. So you're not wrong. I think it's just with how "pop" feels specifically at the moment that I find it hard to see it's outsider genres like rock/soul etc as "pop" on a personal level. Because pop feels so monolithically plain at the moment The gays know how to party

K. seems like you enjoy just writing off peoples opinions here lol, I think Olivia is talented and has a good voice but her music to me is very generic and simple (sure it may be due to a stylistic choice) so outside of it being popular regardless, I don’t love it. Also by choice I wouldn’t be listening to the radio lol. Does anyone really?? That I haven't dismissed. I just can't understand the mentality of "its a popular song so now I dislike it". Just reminds me of the kids in school who disliked whatever the rest of the class liked as part of their whole "no one gets me" schtick. If you don't like it because its simple that's fine. That's an opinion. The comment of mine you got annoyed at originally wasn't specifically about you, you weren't even mentioned but felt like it applied to you. It's just something I've noticed as a regular site user who's got interests in multiple genres that anything outside of "standard" pop gets odd receptions on here and the majority of the time its from users who have an incredbily specific interest in pop music. Like i've seen users accuse Robyn of copying Charli XCX's Brat. Some fans on here just have very limited musical interests.
