It's such a niche thing, it doesn't surprise me that she's unaware what it means. I didn't discover it until I did bellydancing and we were taught how to do it when performing, which is probably the only time you'll encounter it in the West. When Shakira did it during the Superbowl, most people didn't understand and it had to be explained. It is jarring if you don't know what it is. Not knowing is one thing. Comparing it to yodelling or saying you don't like it after someone says it's their culture is quite another. Obviously, she reacted in the moment to something she'd just witnessed for the first time but she should really be mindful and learn to just respond with an "ok..." in such situations. Her apology seems genuine because it comes across as so normal and unrehearsed like she said it with no PR intervention, so I think she deserves the benefit of the doubt. But she really should do more to mitigate the white blonde bimbo trope when she has the image she does.

Niche?? Have you never seen like some wedding ceremony or other gatherings when music hits and they start calling??. Its such a common thing. Even in movies, if they represent an islamic woman theyll do that for sure ahah. Common i find It hard tò believe

Just because you grew up within a culture where this kind of cheer is common, you cannot expect everyone in the world to know about it. That's far more ignorant than what Sabrina Carpenter did. Even if you find it hard to believe or even impossible that someone doesn't recognize the cheer, reality doesn't bend to your narrow view.

I have no idea what’s the context but she didn’t have to police the audience like that in the first place. she made them feel bad to be in her show.

and then to echo @Economy she did dig a terrible hole for herself because so what if yodeling or (I can’t write it Idw write it wrong) the name of the oriental/arabic chant is a culture. why do you think it’s THAT bad, why does it make you so uncomfortable? what’s wrong Sabrina? and guess what they ARE culture. if they’re not welcome at your show you shouldn’t call yourself a pop artist just say you’re an american singer.
