Ill be the devils advocate and say on one hand is it a bit of an insensitive and uncultured response to someone? Absolutely. But even if she knew it, it seemed like a light hearted of hand comment..  like to an extent my first reaction seeing it was like.. are they doing the lizard meme thing?  why would you do such a specific thing at a show and expect the arrist to be like yas slay queen, let's al do it!

And 2bh most older popstars would probably get scared and call security   but on the other hand its Coachella and most first row people were probs some rich cocked up influencers, I don't think most people would take the it's my culture thing seriously either. My noisy ass would probs ask for an explanation, but she is on a tight schedule as well sooo.. idk man.

Eh, ignorant carries a negative inclination, I personally would say she was unacquainted with the subject at hand.

No one is liable to know and be well versed on all existing customs and traditions all over the fūckin' world, and even after knowing she doesn't have to like it or accept it she just has to respect it and here's where she came short and made a cringey albeit harmless remark.

Things that are criticizable about someone's culture is indeed if something in their culture allows to harm someone else.

We're talking about a traditional music. It's not even about liking it or not. I mean yeah you can like or dislike it as art (because it's human expression).

But you shouldn't say "it's weird" by respect (sounding good is not the first utility of this art, it's about cultural transmission), and even more when you're an artist. When you're an artist you are supposed to have more critical skills about art. But yeah, this coming from a pop artist that probably lacks of knowledge on things further than her field and white American cognitive biases is too much to ask... It's not a critical situation, but she should apologize for it. Cancelling her would be so absurd, we know that she is blatantly ignorant.

But it still, has a very bad connotation. Nazis used to call Jewish people's art "degenerate". And it was a way for them to deshumanize them. Because if you call it "weird" you imply that it lacks of humanity, familiarity in it. Nazis used to make whole expositions of "Degenerate arts" to humiliate Jews...

You talk about Islam (I'd say rewritten Islam by the Wahhabism).

But we're talking about PRE-ISLAM beliefs in North Africa and Middle-East. It's some part of ancient cultures that were the target of erasement by the Islamic colonialism.

And even Mizrahi Jews and Kurds apparently do it, so it's not exclusively Arab. Middle-East isn't Arab, there are several ethnicities and cultures there.

...Anyway, Eurocentrism is strong and changing the perceptions of people on it is difficult and it's okay. But it's not too late to read about Sufism in Islam or old Middle-East beliefs such as Zoroastrism, because it's far more interesting than just cliché bs vehiculated by USA. +USA is litteraly destroying every cultures there...
