Better Album: Born This Way vs MAYHEM

I prefer the songs on Mayhem but BTW is a more solid body of work. 

Mayhem’s weakness is that she started off good exploring different genres (Disease to Killah is perfect) but then Zombieboy, TDD, Lovedrug, DCT, KFL and SOAM all share one sound. It’s so jarring.

If the production was a bit different on The Beast, HBDYWM and Blade of grass, I'd say Mayhem, as is, the standard version of BTW wins by a little bit, cause it's better paced overall.

Born This Way easily. It is well thought out, it has some of Gaga's best vocals, it mixes many different genres into a cohesive whole(industrial,rock,80s,techno, country, synth pop, euro beats, EDM) and it is one of her most thematically consistent albums as well fleshing out the themes of self empowerment, self acceptance, love and connecting it all back to her start as an artist in NYC. The contrast between the heavier sounds with uplifting lyrics makes it quite unique and I personally love the passion in her voice, the vocal growls and playfulness she displays. The songs with her softer vocals like You And I, FOHL, Hair, Bad Kids also creates some nice contrast and show off her range. It's still my favorite album vocally from her and one of my fav albums of all time. I find myself revisiting/reaching for songs like Government Hooker, Scheibe, BJ+AF, Hair, FOHL, Bloody Mary, HML and Judas almost everyday and I'm still not sick of those songs 15 years later. It's an album that holds strong memories for me from when I first discovered Gaga and I cherish it deeply.

I love BTW, it’s high school nostalgia for me too. Listen to it almost daily these days. BUT:

Mayhem has my heart. If you’d told me 15 months ago that an album like this was coming our way… damn. What an era it’s been. Honestly starting to get a little melancholic as it comes to a close ❤️

Mayhem just felt like a darker ARTPOP but all over the place in terms of genre. She should've just stuck to one sound like the first 4 tracks instead of 2/3 being funk and 80s ballads

I’ve listened to Mayhem top to bottom hundreds of times at this point, and sometimes it just doesn’t hit for me. Sorry. It’s a great album, but it lacks character in comparison to her other albums. Most of the album has no message or story to tell. No shade, I love it, but it’s not my fav Gaga release. Some of BTW’s production is starting to age, but damn. Besides the nostalgia, it’s packed with meaning and heart. 

and that’s just my opinion. So don’t be mean to me.
