Economy 52,895
https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/article/canada-officially-hits-nato-2-gdp-target/ Canada which was one of the laggards has finally hit 2% of GDP Defence spending as was part of the comitment under NATO with spending at about $60B annually The increase was largely funded with increase in deficit spending. Mark Carney has put a lot of emphasis in updating Canadas outdated equipment and military infrastructure as well as paying Defence Federal Employees more compared to Justin Trudeau. A less friendly relationship with the USA lately has largely pushed more public support for more defence capabilities compared to before US-Canada tensions Canada is currently the Worlds 13th largest Military Spender still slightly below in relative ratio where Canada is the worlds 10th Largest Economy. Australia for example which has a lower population and smaller economy than Canada, has historically been outspending Canada on defence.

What annoys me is this new push to 5% of GDP spending in NATO Governments already struggle to keep up with basic services and investments and still chronically run unsustainable deficits, how on earth is one going to be spending 5% now????? Even the USA for comparison many years doesnt hit 5% (its usually just over 4%)

The over reliance on America was always a national security risk for Nato nations. America is an ally to no one apart from Israel, they were only ever using/acting as a creditor to Europe. Trump just broke the illusion. Even when Trump goes in 2028, the push for higher defence spending in the alliance shouldn't receed. Europe will never be safe unless it can personally defend itself. Fair. Its an unfortunate world we live in. Thats gonna have to come out of already strained budgets that dont fund healthcare or infrastructure properly despite already running deficits as it is And they will never tax the rich a lot more which could solve a lot of the funding gap if we all did it at once and they had nowhere to hide but in this global econony we got a race to the bottom so everyone wants to have a "competitive and business friendly" tax rate for billionaires Tho i wouldnt raise taxes too much on the businesses and Corporations themselves, i think on the individual level the rich are seriously under taxed
