RAMROD 117,023 Posted March 23 Share Posted March 23 Sharks in the Bahamas have tested positive for cocaine, caffeine, and common painkillers, according to a new scientific study analyzing marine pollution in the region. The research, led by biologist Natascha Wosnick from the Federal University of Paraná, was published online on February 20, 2026, in the journal Environmental Pollution. Scientists examined blood samples from 85 sharks near Eleuthera Island and found that nearly one-third contained traces of human-related drugs. The findings add to growing evidence that ocean ecosystems are being impacted by contaminants linked to human activity, including wastewater and drug trafficking. The affected species included Caribbean reef sharks, nurse sharks, and lemon sharks. According to the study, caffeine was the most commonly detected substance, marking the first time it has ever been recorded in sharks globally.
