Don't Call Tonight is one of the best songs on Mayhem and equally so, one of of her most underrated songs ever.

I don't get some of the comments about Fun Tonight. It's easily the darkest song she's ever released (and I'm not talking about dark pop). Maybe you have to have been through it to understand - she even said this was written in protest when Bloodpop again asked her to write something happy. It screams loud and clear many things you go through in the situation she's describing - with personal touches of course, like how it manifests when you experience chronic pain and how that interacts (and if you've read the latest Vogue interview she's not pain-free at all and also ofc still has to take medicine - they of course didn't mention for what - and isn't fully healed like some here think, because fibro is incurable atm) partly because most sufferers are women, and like most female-majority diseases is under-researched.

The song is so obvious to me, even the almost painful devil-may-care sarcasm when comparing to the cheerful sound itself. I may have a different kind of chronic pain, being bedridden (my room and the bathroom next to me have been my world since I was 23 and I'm now 35, all due to a medical mistake that effed up nerves in my hip when I was 19 and first became housebound due to no fault of my own) but everything she sings sounds like it couldn't be more clear, whether an irresponsible doctor has left her without important medicine they think you don't need to taper (which would mean what she's feeling is even more traumatic because it's external - I've been there) or she feels it due to her lack of privacy, constantly being used, male jealousy and lack of true partnership and love for who she truly is and of course the horrifying thing that is chronic pain. Look to Disease's video to look into 4 minutes of 24/7 for a portrait of chronic suffering. She couldn't have painted the mind of someone in incredible pain any better.

Why is Fun Tonight  her darkest? If it's not yet clear, Fun Tonight's subject ends in ... ideation. Maybe passive, but could've even been active, poor woman - I'm glad she seems so much better equipped and more content than we've ever seen her - remember the Vogue quote about the time she released Chromatica and right before: "I was functioning as well as a woman who blacked out from hard liquor every day could have." What a difference, she's finally glowing again.

As for the question: She's a genius and I'm not choosing, sorry! DCT is heavenly, with gorgeous lyrics like "The sun is rising, but we're out of light/We twist the knife too many times to say goodbye". It also seems like a personal song but one that isn't cloaked in poetry (especially with real life context) and a has fantastic bridge.

It's just that, while House isn't my thing (but probably would've been if she could have been as involved as she was on all of her other albums - everything she touches turns to gold, whatever the genre), the courage she showed by pouring her heart out during the most painful time one can, making Fun Tonight both a great song and still confusing people who haven't been through it with its real meaning? Amazing. Not choosing.

I stopped reading after "the darkest song she's ever released" when Til It Happens To You, Angel Down, and Swine exist... lmao.

Fun tonight

This may sound dramatic but the lack of objectivity really irks me about this site sometimes.

Fun tonight having the superior vocals and lyrics by all objective standards but still getting trashed because of an overproduced 10 sec bridge  :koons:

The concept of Fun Tonight being classified as a song

Y'all can make essays about how this song is dark or whatever but it won't change the fact that it's just not a good listening experience.

Yeah, even with DCT being one of the weaker tracks on MAYHEM, it still definitely clears FT.

and you're.. completely right!

Fun tonight is easily one of her worst songs for me. Regardless of intention it just doesn't deliver or work in execution. DCT is probably among weaker songs on Mayhem but passes Fun Tonight and a lot of others Chromatica songs very easily for me.

Whenever I hear the opening of Don't Call Tonight I get the same horrible feeling as when Stupid Love starts

Get your ears checked, that opening is ETHEREAL

That's your opinion and completely fine! I even said I wouldn't choose in the poll myself for different reasons because I really love DCT too, that bridge and those vocals are amazing. I'm sorry if I was a bit long-winded to you, sometimes that's just who I am. :laughga:

It just comes down to music taste (and experiences) being subjective. The only thing is that I constantly read how so many people don't seem get what FT is about - I personally don't need people to love the song because that's up to every individual, everybody's different, it's just this misunderstanding about the subject matter that's in every thread about Fun Tonight, that's all.

I'm not going to talk down like that to you, nor laugh at you even though you seem to take me for an idiot. Why won't I? Because that's not the kind of person I am. By the way, I know her entire catalogue, published or having been available for 8 minutes. Did you think I was lost being on GGD or something? If you wanted to hold a civil debate because you didn't agree, that would've been fine by me. But I must admit that my break made me forget what some here think is "discourse".

Anyway, as a woman who survived what two of her songs you mentioned are about... on a subjective level, yes, the feelings behind FT are much worse. Because the ideation I talked about is a result. The genesis of the songs you mentioned was probably partially, together with many other things, what led to the feelings present in Fun Tonight, which you don't seem to have picked up on yet (maybe you shouldn't have stopped reading and then laughed at me. Just stop reading and go about your day then).

I thought about Angel Down before posting yesterday, but it has protest song DNA in it and honors life needlessly cut short, whereas FT is a very personal opposite. Anyway, I've been her fan from 2008 onwards and don't want the banhammer for spelling out the subject matter even more. I also never said I'm FT's biggest stan or something - I couldn't even choose between DCT and FT for very different reasons.
