Meningitis Outbreak Raises Alarms In Britain

Thousands of students in Kent are being urged to get vaccines and take antibiotics as health chiefs deal with an “unprecedented” and “explosive” outbreak of meningitis.

Some 15 cases of meningitis have so far been reported to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), up from 13 reported previously, including two deaths.

The number of cases is expected to rise because the incubation period for the infection – to when symptoms appear – is two to 14 days.

The outbreak is being viewed by experts as unprecedented owing to the high number of cases appearing in such a short space of time.

All of those affected who are currently linked to the outbreak are young adults, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said. A 21-year old student at the University of Kent and a teenage student at a school in the town of Faversham have died.

The agency said it was also aware of a baby with confirmed Meningococcal group B infection, who was not currently linked to the outbreak.

Signs and symptoms of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia can include a fever, headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness, shivering, vomiting and cold hands and feet, the agency said. Septicaemia can also cause a characteristic rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass.

I’m not surprised because of how STAUNCHLY anti-vax the UK has been over the last 15-20 or so years. And before that when I was a kid you would have a “chicken pox party” where parents would willingly put their unvaccinated children around a child with Chicken Pox so they contracted it and “became immune” to it.

This isn't really related to anti-vax tbh.

The MenB vaccine has only been available on the NHS to babies born since 2015. Those oldest kids who had free access to the vaccine are at best 11 years old at the moment.

The outbreak is amongst a section of the population which didn't have access to the MenB vaccine as the UK decided against a catch up vaccine programme in 2015 for teens at the time.

Oh totally not fully, but I’ve lived through all the dumb stuff that British media and people have said or done since American culture started influencing us politically and socially in the early 90s till today. And our approach to medicine and vaccines has absolutely been influenced by americas weird drug culture

Plus I’m sure we had the highest COVID death rates in Europe because people either refused the vaccine or outright ignored the quarantine rules. I remember customers ignoring distancing rules, refusing the wear masks and more when I had to work through the pandemic in 2020, and then when my grandfather died from Covid it infuriated me even more.
