Every song had so much potential and when it's about to finally reach it, the song ended.

I agree with that. It's not even just a Chromatica thing, I noticed it in a lot of songs released in the past years. Choruses on many songs are feeling weak except the last chorus which has more beats/instrumentation and is more explosive, and then the song endsΒ :huntyga:Β It's like the entire song is a slow build up to one great chorus and then it's over

Well, that depending on what metric used for this graph. But in general, it is considered Gaga's lowest performing album as far as her main albums concerned.Β  Sure, it had its big moments like superbowl half time and the such fun tour, but the era more often than not...,. forgotten.

By sales, it's lowest sales overall. Merch wise it was uninspired. By impact, it had less radio friendly singles, and it was released in between her two other eras that were bigger culturally (ASIB & Chromatica). And critical wise, it was lukewarm at best, mixed at worst. Plus fans largely really dislike this pivot to western sound inspired album, making this album as niche even in her own fan base. Remember how divided the fan base were when Perfect Illusion, (one of my personal all time fave), came out? Yeah, not a good memory to look back.

Streaming wise, it is also her lowest ranking by streaming counts. strengthening its position as fans most least liked album. And this is important, because Gaga's career largely driven by her large fanbase than GP, that some other artists has, such as Whitney, Adele or Celine Dion. This just goes to show most fans really don't want to spin this album, even after years of its initial release, which is unusual since Monsters usually have shift appreciation to an album that was initially divisive, ARTPOP is the biggest example.

Says more about her fanbase than her or the album tbh

They eat up lazy production and bad lyrics 'cause they can shake their holes loose in the club while it's spinning they but sh*t on a more traditionally produced album about generational and personal trauma 'cause "ew guitars, what the yee haw is this"

If my li’l 2013 self knew that one day ARTPOP would be able to qualify as β€œoverrated”, I would have $hat my shorts!Β

It really is the only album where the overall reception improved over time. Most others have remained in similar light since their debut (including my poor Joanne β™₯️), or in the case of Chromatica, declined (although I said from the beginning that one wasn’t exactly for me).

Oh, you mean you don’t think it’s funny when fans trot out the β€œRepublicanne” jokes in spite of the album being deeply anti-MAGA?Β :ladyhaha:

Lmao at least that’s Β funny though! I’m talking about even cheaper shots than that.Β

For example, there will be a thread where everyone lists their favorite song from each album, and they just skip over Joanne. Β As thoughΒ Β it’s just sooooo impossible for them to pick one song from that album that they can say they like more than the others.Β

I agree that it’s overrated by *some* fans but overall? I think it’s quite underrated.

What doesn’t play in its favor is the fact that it uses so many instrumentals that were just sold to her.

The older I get, the more l love the songs. Sure, they don’t portray the concept very well, but most of them are very solid tracks.

I think they were a bit too polished to sound like radio songs. Like Swine sounds too clean, it should’ve went harder. Same for Sexxx Dreams, the title track and some others. And damn, the Swinefest versions were all superior imoΒ :bradley:Β That clearly didn’t play in its favor either…

But yeah, if you erase all expectations, it’s a solid body of work.

I rarely go back and listen to the album these days, but I look forward to hearing a song from it randomly come on here and there. In the last several years, I haven't been able to listen to the album as a full, the way I can go back and listen to albums normallyΒ

Basically how I feel too nglΒ

Definitely a solid album, but agreed about the songs needing a bit more grit and texture. I think it’s honestly the fact that the live versions are *so* much better than the studio versions (and that the back half of the album isn’t as good as the front half) is why I don’t find myself going back to the studio album as much.

The studio album definitely hit when it was released, we were all bored from lockdowns and we also hadn't heard Gaga go back into dance/pop in a while so it was so novel. It still holds such a special place in my heart and I will always consider it a great album, but it has not stood the test of time like some of her other work.

This was about ARTPOP, but I agree about Chromatica in the sense that it was very needed at the time it came out, but I think it needs a bit of a facelift production-wise to withstand the test of timeΒ
