James Talarico defeats Jasmine Crockett in Dem Primary for US Senate

State Rep. James Talarico defeated U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, emerging victorious over the well-known congresswoman in Texas’ most hotly contested Democratic contest this century with a populist, “top-versus-bottom” message rooted in his Christian faith.

“This is a people-powered movement to take on this broken, corrupt political system,” Talarico said in a brief address to his supporters in Austin before the race was called. “Tonight, the people of our state gave this country a little bit of hope, and a little bit of hope is a dangerous thing.”

The Austin Democrat’s victory comes after a bitterly fought primary consumed by the question of which Democrat’s political and electoral strategy could take the party to its first statewide victory in over three decades. The Associated Press called the race for him shortly before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

So glad I voted for him.

Tonight’s results show he was the better candidate in terms of having a better chance to win in November.

TX is a deep red state for national elections. It will be tough. 

Jasmine Crockett would have had absolutely no chance to win. 

Talarico won white-Anglos, Latinos, two demographics a candidate needs to have a shot in November in TX. 

I’m not saying he will win, but I have hope. 

The Republican candidates are going to a runoff due to nobody getting over 50% of the vote.

Exactly. He has had my vote from the beginning. He is the only one capable of winning deep red Texas.

It's setting up an interesting senate race for November as Talarico is so deeply and openly christian that it will create a unique challenge for the Texas GOP to go after him.

I'm worried about his lack of support among Black texans, but that's what the next few months are for. I hope Crockett turns out in support of him. I know that they're close and respect one another so I hope she leverages her celebrity status to help his support among her supporters. I do think his Christianity will be a big help in that.

I think the question to be answered is this - is there a lack of support among black texans? 

Or were black texans in the primary backing one of their own community members but will still back Talarico now Crockett is out

I don't think Jasmine Crockett represents the right way to do the "fighter"strategy and I don't think this means that that isn't the winning strategy for Democrats. It's a shame the media is taking that angle on this

People are upset when their candidate doesn’t win but I think most Black Texans understand the assignment. 

He has 8 months to reach these voters.

Agreed! It's probably a bit of both, but I do think there was a bit less support for him generally, though, among Black Texans and some of that is because of his whiteness. That said, he and his team are very aware of that shortcoming. they know he's wonder bread and are comfortable with that (refreshing) but want to try to show Black Texans he listens to and moves to their concerns, too. So I'm not gloomy about his prospects, it's just basically the one thing that's his hurdle atm. But I do have faith bc there's so many months to garner the needed support because to win he REALLY needs Black Texans behind him. It's less a support issue and more an enthusiasm one. He needs enthusiasm to translate to turnout not, "I'll be happy for him if he wins it" energy

I think it definitely helps that he never took a shot to smear Crockett. He has said time and again how he respects her a lot.

Yeah, its way easier to rally the base after primary season if it didn't get dirty

It's a good call. It would be nice if we were living in a world where an opinionated (in the best way possible) black woman could have a decent shot at winning Texas, but it is what it is for now. And I think she's able to take a lot from the race with her for the next time. 
Also pretty sure majority of people who would have voted for her will be voting for Talarico, not sure it would have been the other way around.
